OCZ is not a good choice as there is no way of knowing what you will be getting. Some V2 60GB drives are actually 55GB.

It is a complicated issue. Read up on OCZ's 25nm transition fiasco if you have the time.

If you will be using your SSD for average tasks (office, net, games, movies, etc...) then you probably don't need the higher IOPS of an SF drive. I would go for either a Crucial C300 or Corsair Force 60. I think for your budget you could probably get a Kingston SSD but their line-up is very confusing so I wouldn't be able to recommend a good one (I think their Toshiba controller SSDs are their best product)

The general consensus is that in general usage, the difference between SSDs is negligible. Sandforce drives usually have higher IOPS figures and Marvell drives have high sequential read speeds... I would just get the best deal around for a C300, M4 (C300's successor) or any Sandforce 12xx drive such as Corsair Force, patriot Inferno (again, avoid OCZ).

P.S. It's worth it. I've done it to a couple of people and they notice the difference

Check out the Samsung 470 Series SSD's. I just purchased one and installed it on my laptop. Win7 boots light-years faster than the 7200rpm drive that it originally came with, and in general, it seems so much snappier.

Which was resolved several weeks ago and is gravely misleading to still put there without some information about the current situation, which would go something like "Some drives with lower channels are still out there in the channels but can be RMAed for the larger version for free, so that the only thing that can happen is that you have to wait a few days longer". If that's a problem or not depends on the person and their situation

At that budget in the U.S. he should have no problem finding an SSD at $1.5 per gig which is the typical sale price. If your cousin has enough time for bids and shipping get an Intel 80GB G2 from ebay. Have him check auctions daily. Otherwise, if he has a U.S. address to ship to, you definitely will be able to get one (not necessarily an Intel) from newegg.com. They feature SSD sales often. If there isn't enough time he still can try to find the nearest Frys or MicroCenter. You will easily find an SSD in your budget in MicroCenter's current May online catalog flyer that is online. MicroCenter can also ship. Otherwise, he maybe left with whatever is the nearest computer store which may not have the best deal. Best of luck.

My advice..

Want the best problem free SSD... its Intel.
Want the fastest SSD ... is a SF based SSD like crucial / Corsair Force.

Intel's are not the fastest, but they have the lowest failure rate out of all the SSD's combined.

So Get an intel SSD or a Crucial C300 series if u want speed, or a Corsair Force.

RMAing is not fun. Since OCZ hasn't issued a recall you can not be certain that you will be getting what you intended. Why risk it when other companies provide the exact same technology for the same price? OCZ's only unique products are low cost PCI-e SSDs. Everything else is covered by other competitive makers.

I have read good things about the Samsung 470 also - wish Annand would release his review of it. He has had the drive for some time now.

Oh sure depending on the situation that may put off someone from buying a concerned SSD, no question about that. But he should be able to make his decision on the current situation and not something else, that can hardly harm.

The OCZ fiasco has not been resolved in a straightforward fashion, and if someone is buying an SSD during a visit to the United States, the last thing they would want to deal with is OCZ's crap. You tell me which one of these drives is actually a 60GB high-performance drive and which is a 55GB low-performance drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=vertex+2+60gb. Then try explaining that to someone who's not familiar with the situation. I own an OCZ, I like it, and I don't plan on buying an OCZ again.

The Green Beret - of those drives, I'd probably pick the Corsair Force.

So you're saying the information provided in your link and post is still 100% correct (sure you can follow the last link of your link to anand's post where it's mentioned but really that's even worse than the usual pr fineprint imo)? Yeah exactly.. There's a big difference between having an opinion on a matter and "forgetting" to mention half the information because it better fits into the narrative that way.

I didn't post the original link, but I'm familar with the issue and read about Anand Lai Shimpi's involvement in resolving the OCZ dilemma, which led us to having the two Vertex 2 60GB drives I linked in my post. While the original poster of the thread could have explained the situation a bit better, it's really too complicated to warrant the effort. OCZ got itself into this mess - forum users shouldn't have to dig OCZ out of it. If someone wants to save a few dollars on an OCZ, they should just read Anand's article and decide for themselves whether it's worth it: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4256/the-ocz-vertex-3-review-120gb/4.

I just ordered an Intel 320 series SSD yesterday.
My money speaks as my vote.

But 40GBs is pretty small. If you could bump your budget up a bit, go for the 80GB version.

Of your list, I would pick in this order by brands, Intel 320, Corsair Force, Mushkin Callisto, Adata S599. Find a size, at least 64GB or higher. Just my opinion.

I would recommend Intel if and only if he can bump the budget up to the 80GB model, which is about $190 right now. That's a big bump, however, so the purchaser may not be willing to do it. The 40GB model is just too small (and likely takes a serious performance hit too).

good ssd's! every bit as good as the intel. i've had 1 since december and 2 since the end of march. i'd shop price vs. capacity, samsung vs. intel.

Check my link, it's only $160 shipped from Buy.com

I've never had any problems with Buy.com, but I've never posted any positive evals for them either.

My bad :\

I'd just like to reiterate what everyone else is saying and advise against the 40GB Intel drive as it is too small for a modern OS, app pool and page file (before you ask, you need it and it should stay on the SSD).

If the drive will be lightly used (net, office, etc...) than you won't notice any difference between the C300 and F60. Keep in mind that the F60 has 25nm NAND chips (I can't comment on whether there is a big difference from the original model as I haven't read any reviews). The C300 is 4GB bigger in capacity but theoretically slower than the F60. You wouldn't be sorry with either drive unless you get a dud...

That's the junk F60 you're talking about. For about the same price, the real F60 is still available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233124. This is the one OP should buy, unless he jumps up to the Intel 80GB.

Performance hit? why so?

Oh my bad i didnt notice the NAND size...
So now its F60(34nm NAND) vs Intel 320 Series 80 GB....

Wat about this one?
