First and foremost thanks to everyone on my pervious thread about my Dell Inspiron 1720.

I'm looking for additional suggestions for my daughter's netbooks.

1st one is a Dell Mini 10 running windows XP. ( I just installed Ubuntu yesterday trying to give it a new beginning).
She was complaining (as most kids do) about it being slow. So I'm looking to give it new life. It is running a 1.6ghz Atom Processor. Suggestions?

2nd one is a Asus Eee PC 1005peb running Windows 7 starter.
Same thing as above... Saying it was running slow.
Also a 1.66ghz Atom Processor.

Any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

First I've seen this puppy, looks interesting. Cute little puppy.

Are the drivers current? Chipset, bios, etc.?

Is it malware free? Is the start menu cut to the bone?

Is the drive clutter, junk-free and defragged? for this, I recommend Glary. It is both excellent and free> http://www.glarysoft.com/

Just now see there is a new build; I will now get it.

All of the above, re both computers.

Congats on being an uber dad!

So the machines are slow from a fresh install?

Might want to try more RAM. What do they have now?

Good thought. The mini 10 comes with only 1 GB.

Re RAM upgrade potential, I would use Crucial interactive tool for both systems to determine what each maxes out at. (Below) And if upgradeable, I would not necessarily get the upgrades from Crucial, tho they make very good RAM, U can often do better re price elsewhere.

Sorry to be a bit misleading. I only installed Unbuntu onto a partition on only one of the Netbooks as a trial.

I have ran adware programs and malware programs scanning for potential problems.
(Ad-ware, malwarebytes) Any others you recommend?

Both have 1 gig of ram.

OK, so Ubuntu runs fine then?

Can you just do a fresh Windows install on these? XP should be decent with 1 GB of RAM. 7, not so much. Turning off some services can help, (such as system restore) but only so much.

Yes Ubuntu runs fine. Took a while to install, however it runs boots and seems to run pretty good.

LONG scan in MBAM very thorough. So, if it came up clean, that's good.

Both have 1 gig of ram.
Pls use the link I put up after Ketchup79 thought of RAM, to the Crucial tool to find out what these lappys max out at.

And, again, pls get Glary and run it on both systems. It often makes a real difference.

Again, are all drivers/bios up to date?

I knew only one came with 1 GB of RAM, now, I get both did. but you may be able to upgrade, pls find out.

You could double the RAM on the Asus.....this vendor sells 2GB stick for $45....might be able to get it for less and it would make a huge difference. Again, pls use the Crucial tool for both computers.

Re the Dell mini 10, from below, it seems 1GB is the max.
http://www.technologytell.com/gadge...-limited-to-1gb-of-ram-no-upgrading-possible/

But, again, I would still make sure via the crucial tool. U have nothing to loose.

Edit: just found this on ebay re the Asus....new, if compatible, looks way too good to be true. But, vendor is in America not Hong Kong.

Pls someone review the above and assess.

Now, another one at auction, a day to go....used. I had bad experience buying used sticks on ebay, so I now only buy new.

There are MANY MORE on ebay.

It depends upon the version of the Dell Mini 10 that you have. The 1010 version originally came with 1GB, but there was a later 2GB version of the 1010 model. However, the kicker was that you could only access the full 2GB with it running Ubuntu. WinXP was limited to only 1GB by Microsoft.

If you are running Ubuntu, check the system specs and see if it actually shows 2GB memory installed.

In my experience nothing can make those old Atoms bearable. You can throw ram and SSD's at them and still be disappointed.

Craigslist/ebay them and put the money towards a faster setup.

Thanks. Actually thought about doing just that. Doing a clean wipe and reinstall windows.

Thanks

To be redundant, using the crucial interactive tool is the fastest and best way to determine options in this.

Virgorising,

Just opened the Netbook to look.

It appears there were the following:

196 Resistry problems
1 shortcut problem
No spyware
856.62 mb of temp files
No startup Manager issues.

That's what I have on the screen.

Good?

Well, having almost a GB of temp files is significant. WAS significant.

I also strongly recommend U defrag. Including a boot time defrag. It really will make a difference.

Did U use the interactive Crucial tool to determine the reality of yr RAM potential in both puters?

Until just now, I never knew Intel made a chip called Atom. I am glad I never had one.
