Well...

I'm on an Asus Eee PC 1000HD right now, via Linux Mint 7, and I like it just fine... thank you! So, you're in the right ballpark

If I was going to buy a netbook TODAY, I'd get an Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell - hands down!

If I could wait a while (obviously I can - but not so sure about you) I'd go with an Asus Eee PC 1001HA Seashell (hate fingerprints - love the new texture!) - but it hasn't hit our shores yet (assuming you're in North America too). I'd buy one with NO OS INSTALLED but that's just me. You can buy the 1001HA with Windows, Linux, or no OS installed.

Truthfully, the ONLY reason I dual-boot this netty (with XP) is because I hate to waste a *free* license - but the fact of the matter is - the Windows license isn't *free* - you're still paying for it, whther or not you use it. Some Linux users really get pissed about supporting Microsoft. I'm not of that frame of mind, but I never use Windows on portables, so why waste the time, space, and money, you know? I guess there ARE some bragging rights, but, that's fodder for a different discussion...

I REALLY didn't want to buy an Asus-anything - they seemed so (I dunno) lowbrow or something - but I ran across a deal I couldn't refuse on this 1000HD ($249 @ Target). I replaced the 1GB RAM stick with a 2GB Corsair (only 1 mem slot), a 4GB SDHC media card (for sneakernet) and dual-booted it with XP / Linux Mint 7. That's it!

The Asus Eee PC 1000HD has turned out to be one of the favorite machines in my stable. Go figure...

If I had to buy a netbook right now, I'd be looking at either the Asus 1005HA, the MSI Wind U123, or the MSI Wind U210. The U210 is a little pricier and 12in vs the 10.2 of the U123/1005HA, but it sports the MUCH more powerful AMD Neo instead of the Atom. Its 429 at Newegg right now.

i just picked up a wind U123 for my girlfriend to use at school. got to play with it setting it up and really liked it. i played with the settings a lot to increase the amount of things you can see on the screen, like smaller fonts, smaller icons, smaller buttons, etc... and I think its much more usable now than when we received it. She loves it and its saves her 4 lbs in her backpack over her older lappy. i may consider getting a 12in or so when i replace my 5 year old 600m, but the 10 in. screen is just too small for me. I can not multitask like i am used to and i would have to "reinvent the wheel" so to speak with my normal computer habits. its a great solution for quick use, checking email, or getting directions but i would not want it as my only resource. to me its like a really useful PDA.

If you want a 12"er instead of a netty...

You might consider the Eee PC 1201HA - it's right around the corner (4Q 2009)

It's ION-based, 1366x768 display, 6-cell battery (11 hours), Bluetooth, Draft-N wireless, Chicklet keyboard, blah, blah, blah... and it's supposed to go for around 500 bones!

This thing looks H-O-T!!!

Just got the EEE 1101 and I gotta say that the thing is nice. Yea, it isn't as fast as the dell precision it's replacing, but the size and battery life makes up for it. I'm not a huge stickler for fingerprints, so the shiny surface doesn't get to me, but it could if you really don't like a visual "mess"

My #1 pet peeve is fingerprints.

I share a workstation with about 10 other ppl (at work)- and I swear - they won't clean anything until their fingers are sticking to it - keyboard, mouse, monitor, telephone, desk, et cetera, et cetera...

I guess that's where I get this loathing for fingerprints. OMG, ppl are such pigs!

No wonder all these communicable diseases are spreading like wildfire!?!?!?

I think health insurance should be more like car insurance - so I can sue the idiots when they make me sick!

Anyway, the texture on the 1001HA is a welcome improvement, IMHO - outta sight - outta mind!

It does, but its still Atom N270 based, so its performance even with Ion is still going to be dismal. A Neo with a decent IGP would pound it into the dust in performance.

Either way, lots of interesting developments in the low cost notebook market in the coming months.
