Suggestions for a video camera

i have someone going to Hongkong and Tokyo in a week or so.

I am looking for a Handy cam upgrade, currently i have a JVC digital recorder (the one that uses DVI tapes).
Is HD camera's have become practical with there storage yet? meaning the amount of time it can record in the highest possible resolution. If so can you guys point me to a model & possible reviews?

Also i have a nikon-D70 with the standard 30-70mm lens? i need a better zoom lens and possibly a fish eye lens as well, are they cheap in Asia, say if i go with the nikon brand of lens? any suggestions here?

Canon HF100 is a nice, small camera that records to SD cards with HD resolution.

i was looking at the canon HF 10. It records in a new format (AVCHD), even though all the big name brands have a camera in there lineup that records in that format, i am not sure if it is too early to jump into it.

Looks like even the HF100 records in AVCHD format!

The HF 10 and 100 are more or less identical, except that the HF10 has an internal hard drive.

I just got a HF100 and am pretty happy with it; AVCHD support isn't where I'd like to see it either, but I expect the support will improve over time.

There's a decent Wiki article about the format another about format support in editing software.

I recently bought the Sony HDR-SR11 and the picture quality is simply amazing. I can also record about 450minutes at 1920x1080 resolution and if thats not enough you can buy the HDR-SR12 which doubles the HD space. The HF10 has 16GB of internal flash memory...not a hard drive. Other than that and being black it is the same as the HF100. Same yourself some money and buy the HF100.

I take it that you don't like tapes? I guess I'm old fashion. I like tapes and always keep the original after I upload it into the computer and I keep it off site. You don't need HD tapes for the HD camcorder. Just get good SD tapes and they work fine. I have the Sony HDR-HC7.

Is that the 18-70? I don't remembering Nikon making a 30-70.

Any Nikon lens not bought in the US will not be serviced by Nikon USA. They are considered gray market and have to be serviced where you bought them. Do a search on the dpreview site.

Apparently that HF10 costs around 9k hongkong dollars! which ends up costing more than what it costs here, so it wasnt bought in HK.
Where did you guys buy your HF10 from? B&H sells them for approx. $900 is there a better deal anywhere?

Its not that i dont like tapes, i just like to try out the new technology, and ya its the 18-70mm lens, you're right. Did'nt buy any lens as well from HK.

I for some reason had a impression that electronics will be cheaper in HK & Japan! Apparently its not so or i dont know the tricks of buying it from there.

Try Newegg...they have them for $819 with free shipping. But unless you need the internal 16G flash memory just get the HF100 and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.
