she's got a clunker to trade in, yay for her!

requirements:
sedan
leather seating
28 mpg+
stick shift (a must)
FWD (rwd no go in northeast, no awd since it reduces mpg requirement)

tsx shot down since she thinks its fugly.

i suggested accord. anything else?

think we're going to go with the civic ex-l in 5 speed manual.

Does it need the 28mpg for the cash for clunker thing? The stick shift is kind of tricky, since that's mostly only found in economy cars and sport cars.

I'd say Honda Accord EX (you'll have to do some looking, but six speeds are out there) or Subaru Legacy i Limited (no turbo on this one).

yes, 28+ will max out the benefit since you need to do better by 10 on a passenger car to get $4500.

Fusion SEL, get the I4 with a manual and it should meet all of your requirements. The V6 will hit 28+ MPG if you really try on the highway, but you won't see that highway / city combined.

Edit: the V6 only comes with an auto anyway, so it doesn't matter.

The '10+ Fusion can be found with manual shift and 2.5L, though finding that combo with leather as well may be somewhat tricky.

The Accord is a fine choice, although the new ones are pretty damned large.

Does it have to be a new car for a cash-for-clunker rebate or is it allowed to be a year or two old?

uh, honda civic EX-L sedan with a stick - that might be tough to find too.
your requirements are kinda tough - may have to give up one or more...

is the 28mpg for hwy or avg?

That kind of combined fuel economy is probably only going to be found on some combination or features of the following :

Economy Car
Hybrid
4-Banger

Which makes finding one with a leather interior and manual shift problematic. Even generic Civics (non-SI) only manage 29mpg combined. The Si drops it to 24mpg combined. The '09+ Honda Accord 2.4L I4 with manual transmission gets a combined 25mpg.

Hyundai Elantra SE:

5-speed stick
leather (with Premium+Leather package)
sedan
FWD
28.5 MPG combined

OR

Kia Forte SX:

I was just looking it up and it's combined and it goes by EPA ratings.

I don't get the 18mpg part though. Is that the threshold to get the $4500? Can it be higher and, so long as it still gets 10mpg than the car it's replacing, still get the $4500?

It's a compact, and FWIW, if a compact is on the table, the Focus is an undeniably better vehicle, with a smoother motor, better soundproofing, better handling, and the Mazda Duratec 2.0 w/timing chain (as in the Mazda3i). The SYNC system is really nice for those who like music and interfacing with PMP devices. Also you can get them without that god-awful chrome fender trim for the higher models '09+. I was one of the lucky ones to snag an '08 without that crap.

I was under the impression that the leather package = no stick shift for the Elantra sedan.

It's true : From Hyundai USA Website configurator ..

"Premium Package + Leather (A/T only)
- Power sunroof
- Heated front seats
- Leather seating surfaces"
