The Honda Civic EX-L and Accord EX-L both would meet her criteria, to the best of my knowledge, and both are excellent cars with excellent resale value, safety, and reliability.

When I helped my gf buy her last two cars, my criteria were stick shift, safety, reliability, and predictably handling. She got a used Accord until she could afford a 350Z. The Z has power that could get her into trouble, but the handling is pretty much predictable understeer, so I don't worry too much. If she daily drove my S2000 I would be scared shitless that she would kill herself in a week.

Didn't come across a whole lot when I looked a while ago when I was trying to find cars that pulled 28mpg combined. My van qualifies for the cash for clunkers thing I was just goofing off to see what I could get. A jetta wagon tdi is really the one I liked.

Do the diesel cars even qualify?

My local dealer is giving $6,500 off on loaded up Focus SES & SEl models + they get 28mpg with a manual trans or 27mpg with an automatic trans.

Other options that have leather seats as an option + 28mpg:

so apparently there's a civic ex-l in 5 speed. they have to get it from their other lot so we're gonna head back over next weekend to check it out.

also test drove the civic si. omg, what a smooth shifter and easy to modulate clutch.

Yeah, and you can get leather seats on the EX class of the Forte, which runs about 2,000 cheaper than the comparable Honda Civic. (Base of the Forte EX is around 15,795, and the equivalent Civic is around $17,500.)
