I employ the multi camera method for the critical areas. Motion lights level the playing field and coupled with a daylight aperture motion camera can yield great results in very specific areas. Getting one camera to do all things is very difficult and not really needed when two different and inexpensive cams will get better results.
Headlights just always blow out cams. Use a tight focus on where the rear plate must be, high frame rates and a motion light.

Hmmm, multi-camera. So along with the mega-zoom Kaido is promoting and a thermal IR camera I ought to be able to cover all the bases.

But seriously, that makes good sense. Practical and financial. (I mean your comments ... not the zoom/IR combo). And in case any other newbies are reading, here's another starting point:

Thanks for the (inadvertent) pointer skyking.

I wish that thermal/FLIR network cameras were cheaper...it'd be awesome for seeing human & animal bodies in the rain & dark and stuff. AXIS has a 640x480 resolution model (their highest-resolution thermal camera), but it's ten grand.

On a tangent, you should sign up for a free Evernote account & start keeping track of all of the stuff you're finding out. It lets you have multiple notes under one folder, so you can do one for home automation, indoor building materials, outdoor building materials, security cameras, etc. That way when the time does come for you to pull the trigger on your project, you have a single, easy reference to go through instead of forum posts, bookmarks, emailed snippets, etc. It let you put in text, links, photos, etc. Also sign up for Pinterest & Houzz (both free) to start getting design & house style ideas. So much free content out there to help you check out different options & make decisions

Fiber cabling could help to improve the transmission speed and distance if your house is big.

Ha, I'm not going to be building a mansion. In fact, my inclination is to spend money on quality, innovation and tech over size. Of course, have to negotiate the specifics with my wife but nonetheless, it seems like going Cat 6a is probably more than I will likely use in anything approaching the near future.

Fibre, as mentioned to me, might be useful in an exterior run where you might have to worry about water or grounding to a lightning arrest system.

Fibre does appeal somewhat but the widespread lack of support at the moment makes it a bit problematic. That's what having a some smurf tubes ready and waiting is for!

Right now we're still trying to decide where to build though.:\
