I am building a new sytem for the office, currently I am running an athlon xp2700+ with 1 GB ram and a radeon 9800 pro on an Albatron KXD18pro. The new version of my cad software is greatly taxing the old system. The software is more cpu intensive than graphically intensive which may sound somewhat backwards but is true. The owners gave me a 1k budget plus the cost of the OS. I am supplying the monitors as I can take them with me if I ever go (which won't be for a long time, very happy here).
My decision was to build on the intel965p platform so the system will be upgradable for quite sometime. The catalogs I use to design from are rather large hence the RAM overkill, it will be used eventually. The questions I have are mostly associated with memory timings and overclocking with 4GB Ram. This is the first intel based machine I have built since the days of the Pentium Pro (I was Kalis here at that time, forgot to change my email and lost my old username). Back then we were excited about getting 235-255 Mhz out of our P pro 200's Anybody remember the Asus K7m?
Here are the parts:
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
Core 2 DUO E4300
4GB CORSAIR 6400C4 4-4-4-12 (1GB sticks x4)
XP MEDIA CENTER sp2
SEAGATE 250GB ST3250620AS SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
LG GSA-H42NK 18X DVD
THERMALTAKE MATRIX VD2000BNS Mid-Tower
THERMALTAKE W0070 430W PS
DUAL DVI ATI RADEON X1650 PRO 512MB
2 ACER 22" AL2216WBD 1680X1050 700:1 5MS LCD's
I am sure I will have to relax the memory timings a good bit for stability running 4GB of ram, I am hoping someone here would have some suggestions for a stable build for the office. I would like to overclock to about 2.8-3.2 Ghz if I can get there without having to spend much more money. I have the stock cooler coming with the chip and am willing to spend a little more money for an aftermarket cooler if necessary, hopefully one I can find locally to save some time. Several of you are experimenting with some of the e4300 builds and I am hoping you can shed some light into that dark black case for me.
TIA!
