suggestions on a good book?

I haven't read anything in a while. This first semester I didn't take an english course, so I haven't had a good book to read in a while, albeit the books assigned for some classes absolutely suck. I find myself wanting a good book to read.

I like mystery, Tom Clancy books, John Grisham. I'm kinda looking for a book based on a true event, maybe about crime in Chicago or NYC or something interesting.

Amazon's reccomendations all seem pretty bad, so I thought I'd see what ATOT has to suggest.

Thanks,

`K

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk. He's most famous for Fight Club, but of course I've seen the movie, so I'm not going to read the book. I have read Survivor, Choke, Invisible Monsters, and now I'm on Lulluby. Good stuff.

True Crime I can help you with, if you want a list let me know. I can't guarantee Chicago or NYC though. John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer in the Chicago area (actually Des Plaines, IL). There are a few books about him, though i've only read "Killer Clown".

The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World

Wonderful series, but a considerable time investment. I don't really like fantasy, but this series is simply exceptional.

Tom Clancy has lost his edge, IMO. It's almost like he's got some hack writing his books for him now.

After "Red Rabbit" I doubt I will ever buy another one of his novels.

Anyway, I would recommend picking up a classic if there are any that your highschool didn't require you to read. I just finished "The Catcher in the Rye" and liked it quite a bit. If you haven't read "Great Expectations" that would be my first recommendation, though.

Also Michael Crichton has a new book (new to paperback, anyway) out that looks interesting from the back cover. I haven't picked it up yet.

The da vinci code is so over-rated. It sounds so much like his prior book: angels & demons(which I feel is better). His facts take priority over telling a story.

I'm about halfway through Fast Food Nation right now and I like it. Some of the statistics given about the fast food industry are mindboggling.

Read Atlas Shrugged. A bit long and a bit preachy in parts but it's the Best. Book. Ever. That I've read anyway.

I used to read Grisham and Clancy, until I finished all of Grisham's books and Clancy's are no longer worth buying, as he doesn't appear to write them himself anymore.

I've since become addicted to Ken Follet's stuff, although I've now read everything he's written. Code to Zero got me started and I would highly recommend it. He also has a number of books that are grounded to various degrees within historical contexts.

Try his stuff and you'll go looking for more.
