Have an $800 budget for a video card. Not exactly needing to spend it all but that is what the money is for. Was hoping the aftermarket 290's would have come down under $500 by now as that would probably be the card to get. Been looking at 290x and 780ti and it seems hard to justify the price of the 780ti at close to $700. Found an asus 290x dcuII for $579 but oos atm. Wish it wasn't the asus but it seems to be the best deal atm.

Just wanting some input. Specs in sig.

I just bought a XFX R9 290DD from shopblt. I ordered it on Jan 28 and it shipped out on Feb 7th so it wasn't too bad of a wait, and their prices are fair compared to some other retailers.

I would stay away from the 290x, and look into either 2 290s, or a 780ti if you are looking for a single card. I'm assuming you are in the states, so it might take a while to find a card at retail. Even green cards are getting inflated now (780tis are close to $900 here in Canada through newegg ).

If that $579 290x ever comes back in stock, it won't be $579.

290x on Newegg is up to $750, yes, more expensive than 780Ti.

There is no rational reason to recommend AMD's high-end products to anyone who cares about value. And I say that as someone who currently has an AMD card. The price increases have just gotten totally outrageous. R9 290 is up about $250 from its original launch price, an increase of 62%.

The 290x was on amazon. You can still find close to msrp deals for the 290/x every few weeks on amazon. I was thinking about 770sli but then I would want the 4gb which ups the cost and after tax would be over $800. Choices, choices.

What resolution? 1080p? If so, just save some money and grab a GTX 780 or a 290 if you can find one for a good deal. The 290X is barely faster than a 290 and the GTX 780ti is only 10%-12% faster than the GTX 780 clock per clock. Too late in the 28nm game to be spending too much more IMO.

Funny situation about this. My 580 died back in November but baking it fixed it. My wife and I have been planning our wedding for about a year so money was tied up in that at the time of my 580 dying or I would have bought the 7950 xfire setup that I wanted for less than $180 a card... So basically since then we have gone everywhere and I have spent a decent amount on this wedding and her dress, ring, everything else all the while knowing that I want/need to replace this 580 I have. For our wedding gifts my wife gave me $800 that has to be spent on a video card otherwise at this point I would try to ride this 580 until 20nm

Also 1080p, corsair tx650, play a variety of games, a lot of bf4 and ff14/gw2

Ah Ok... How about a $800 Newegg giftcard? A GTX 580 @ 1080p is still a very viable card IMO.

Woah Woah Woah.....why in the heck would you want the 4GB version? You realize all you need is the 2GB version and it will beat a single titan.

I see used and even some brand new 770's going for $300 on BST all the time. For $600 and outperforms a titan, you cant go wrong.

Tried that approach.. such a terrible thing to have to buy a card at this point in the cycle. The horrors of being forced to upgrade. But on the positive side I get this dead man walking 580 out of here and I know I can swing a $500 video card and a new 1440p monitor. Seems like a 780 is the way to go sitting at $500 with all the 290s priced higher.

I really don't want to buy used unless I know the selling. The 2gb would probably be fine at 1080p but in the past weeks most 770s have been around $350. And I plan on upgrading to 1440p whenever I find a solid deal on one (not in a huge hurry)

Any suggestions on a 780?

Depends on how hard you want to push it? The Gigabyte GHz card is an all around good card. I have heard great things about the Evga ACX cards as well.

If you want to dive into some decent overclocks after 1.2v, then a Classy or a Lightning would be your best best.

More memory than you need doesn't increase performance. Less memory than you need is a BIG hit to performance.

For 1080p, it seems like 2 GB is the sweet spot. 3 is even overkill, more is just silly. Don't pay extra just for more VRAM if you don't need it.

at 1440p the 2gb versions are still good enough.

Absolutely makes sense, the more filters you put over the game the more memory is required. At 1440p like he mentioned he was upgrading to he will obviously be putting less MSAA, as anything more than 2x is going to hit him hard even with more powerful SLI setups. In this case @1440p 2GB SLI setup is still great.

Aye, that's a good point. Upping MSAA will likely bottleneck you based on the GPU's ability to render before you start hitting VRAM caps for most cards.

I personally am just going to sit out this generation of cards on principle. My gtx 570 is still holding up well in terms of games (PC gaming is stagnating graphically at this time). It doesn't make sense for me to pay more than twice the money I originally paid for this card (almost 4 years ago) to only get twice the performance.

My buddy has that card, and its struggling to max out games.

If you really want a 290 or 290x amazon doesn't overprice them ridiculously. You just gotta pre-order and wait for it.
