I just received the Sennheiser HD558 headphones and tested them out on both PC (Mass Effect 2) and TV (TV through Pioneer audio system). WOW...cannot believe what I've been missing! Great sound and so comfortable to wear. The other headphone with a sound card attached were too big and heavy for me. The Sens are a perfect weight and fit. These are all I need.

Thanks for all the input.

Get wireless! Come on is 2015.

There is a reason no high end headphones are wireless and its because it sucks ass.

I used to use Sennheiser HD 555, the 558s should be great for you OP. Enjoy them.

I currently use AKG K712 paired to a Schiit Magni/Modi AMP/DAC and a U37 microphone.

*ATTENTION
Whatever you buy, do not, i REPEAT, DO NOT buy headphones that have multiple volume adjusters (for each speaker, front right, front left, center etc...).
IS A PAIN IN THE ASS every time you want to lower / raise the volume.
+ Get wireless! Come on is 2015.

MR. RUNZ checking in here. I am an audiophile, and currently using the Sharkoon Xtatic Dolby digital, Pro Logic 5.1 headphones. They come with a decoder/amp that will feed the cans, as well as speakers. There is a control box on the wire that lets you adjust front, rear, center, and sub individually, and indicates with various colored led's. It also has a *main volume control*, and mike mute.

Done. Bought Sen HD 558...seemed the best price/features.

I currently use my sennheiser 598's with a detachable mic and am relatively happy with how it has worked out. how are you liking the 558 for gaming? A buddy of mine is looking for a new gaming headset/headphones and only has about $100 he wants to spend... maybe the 558 is the way to go?

I use the Sennheiser 598s as well, but I kind of wish sometimes that I would have splurged a bit more and got the HD 600.

I didn't because I'm not really an audiophile, but I still like great sound. That's not to say that I'm unhappy with my HD 598. It sounds great, but I had the HD 558 before (until they broke) and the HD 598 uses the same driver apparently....which I did not know.

HD 598 sounds better, but that's because of the housing..

Proper studio headphones give better audio quality AND better value than most gaming headsets.

Anyone that takes the stance of "all gaming headsets are junk" should rethink their position. If you break it down to the bare minimum, a gaming headset is just a pair of headphones with a mic. Just as there are mediocre headphones, there are also going to be less than average headsets out there. I think for any die hard gamer a good gaming headset is still the way to go. There are just some things you can't get with a pair of headphones at similar prices, 7.1 surround sound for example? Before you go out and buy another pair of 558's I suggest you look at one of these. You can buy yourself the hyperx cloud II for example for around the $100 you have and you'd be better off in my opinion than going with regular phones in the same price range.

That's fake surround sound though, you'd get much better results from a nice open back headphones that have a larger soundstage.

Using fake 7.1 surround to simulate surround is just a marketing gimmick.

Also, the hyperX is not even close to $100 headphones, they are maybe $30-40 headphones with a $10 mic attached.

For someone who doesn't care about sound quality any gaming headset is going to be fine, it will give sound and you will be able to talk to people. But for anyone coming from a real pair of headphones (HD 600, AKG K/Q701/2, Beyerdynamic DT 770,880,990, etc etc) would blanch at the sound coming from the HyperX cloud headset.

There are good gaming headsets with good audio quality, but they are vastly over priced to what you could get by just buying headphones and your own microphone, just look at the Sennheiser PC 350 SE, $250 for $150 headphones and a $20 microphone. They're good sure, but you'd save money just buying HD558s and a mic.(PC 350 SE and HD558 use the same drivers if i remember correctly)

The Sen 558 cost about 100.00 + or -. They do not come with mic, but you can buy mics fairly cheap. I do not need a mic and bought Sens new on ebay. I like them because they are ultra comfy and have good sound.

I don't like wireless so I got the Razer Tiamat 7.1. Sounds great and the mic is great, too!

Those were my 2nd choice. Decided against because don't need mic.
