I just built my first computer w/ some old parts:
Duron 800Mhz
Abit KT7A-raid
128 pc133 Mushkin Infineon
128 PC133 Kingston basic
Vantec Socket A fan (newest one) w/ arctic silver II
Radeon 32DDR LE
48x Memorex CDrom
WD 4gig hardrive (old)
Netgear ethernet card (old)
SB AWE64 (old)

I can only overclock to 948Mhz, then I get registry errors while botting up windows2000.
I set muliplier at 9.5x and CPU FSB @ 103/34Mhz. Voltage is at 1.650. Temp. is 29C idle. Is there any way I can improve? I tried increase FSB to 105 but get registry error. Same thing if i increase voltage to 1.675... Any suggestions??

This is my first time building computer not mentioning overclocking!!!

awesome man...i recommend uping the mulitplier to 10 and leave the fsb at default..it seems to be less stable with the fsb to be clocked..in my case...i hit 1.0GHZ with a soyo k7tva-b..it runs stable and idle temp at 40 c...voltage...1.72v...try the 10 x 100...anything higher than that on mine...once in a while itll boot but then craps out...

If you have the KT7A, lowe the multiplier some, and up the fsb alot more. You would get more performance with a higher fsb.

okay. I tried to back down the Multiplier to 9 and increase the FSB...but I kept on getting registry errors. I finally was able to get pass windows start up w/o error at 9 x 105 = 945Mhz at 1.650 Volts. Why I can only increase my FSB so little? Have my duron 800 reached it's limit?

another question...

because I used the pencil trick to unlock my duron 800, I am wondering if the pencil trick is either work, or not work...or does the pencil markings produce different result depending on how dark you mark on the cpu?

Thanks for the tip!

I lowered the multiplier to 7 and increased FSB to 143 and voltage to 1.775. Now I am running at 1 Gig!!

As far as you thinking that maybe the pencil trick is only partially affective...
It is either connecting the bridges or it is not connecting the bridges. there is no real middle ground there. The only middle ground would be if you had them connected and then while putting on the HSF, you rubbed it off. But it will either work or it won't.
So, if you are able to overclock at all, the the bridges are connected.

iamfried, NormanTheCow, and All.......
Not "exactly" so....the signal/s sent to the FSB Multiplier in the cpu is a "set 4 bits" binary signals, and each of the 4 L1 bridges allows the mobo hardware to reset "only one" of each of the 4 default signals. So "one" open/faulty bridge does not control "all 4" signals.

The 4 signals control the "addition" of .5X, 1X, 2X, and 4X to a base of 3X to derive the TotalX = FSB Multiplier...when signals are HI.
(Except add 8X when TotalX = 3X thru 4.5X to set 11X thru 12.5X).

So for example...IF the .5X L1 bridge is still open AND was set default LO as for a 700/7X cpu, THEN the mobo would NOT be able to reset to 7.5X, 8.5X, 9.5X, because the mobo could not reset the default LO to a HI. But it would have no problem resetting to 8X, 9X, etc, IF the other 3 L1 bridges were closed.

Open L1 bridges just cause the loss of resetting the "Adder" they are connected to.

Go with more voltage all the way. I'm running my Duron 800 at a gig with 1.85 cpu core voltage. My RAM doesn't allow me to push the FSB very high...PC100 SDRAM. Also my P/S is crap
