Just got back from the movie, and it was awesome!
I am going to see it again, and buy it when it comes out on DVD!
I guess I could be biased though, since I have read most Tom Clancy's books, and I love all war movies!
I saw it with a buddy of mine who is in the military, and he loved it too! (We are both political science and international relations majors, and the movie dealt big time with issues we study!).

Without giving anything away, the Russians were used to a much greater detail in the movie than in the book, it gave a whole lot more tension to the situation than was in the book. And the Nazis weren't as out of place as I assumed they would be.

Oh, yes, and Cathy was very hot.

I agree. After reading the book and then seeing the trailers, I thought the change would just seem extremely stupid to me throughout the entire film. However, the guy playing the head Neo-Nazi put in a flawless performance and it really didn't bug me nearly as much as I had assumed it would.

Saw it last night. Very good movie, but I had to bite my lip during 2 scenes. Not really spoiler, but....

No way you could get a device containing weapons grade plutonium into a US port. There are many more realistic ways to get it in, I believe Clancy had a better plan in the book. Second, where were all the support ships with the carrier battle group. Your telling me that 10 planes could almost sink a carrier. Yeah, right. Very enjoyable movie other than that.

edit: I guess it's like holding your gun sideways for better aim!! lol. Is Hollywood doing this out of some misplaced political correctness. That would be my guess.

I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it. Yeah, the story was changed from the book, but it is Clancy's book, and he approved all the film's changes.

At least there wasn't something as bad as a T-Rex running around San Diego a la Jurrasic Park 2.

I agree...where were the support ships? Afaik, they don't just send carriers out alone...lol

I wouldn't say SOAF was better than AOTC, though.....then again, I am a SW person - fortunately EPII was better than EPI..

I didn't understand how there wasn't enough of an early warning to scramble some fighters to defend the ship.

Even if by some miracle the planes got in under radar, the missile ships would probably see them before the carrier. In a worst case scenario, I doubt even a quarter of the planes would even be able to get to the carrier. There should be enough antiaircraft guns and missiles on the support ships to take out a decent sized air force.

Is SOAF same kind of ego-pumping for americans as ID4 was? I can't believe it could be any worse than ID4 is! ID4 sucked big time! SOAF should be OK, based on the book (altrough it's been a while since I read it), but if it's full of that "USA saves the world!"-stuff, it will be a major turn-off.

No, don't read my post as an anti-american drivel, since it's not meant as such. It's just that if I want to watch propaganda-movies, I'll watch Leni Riefenstahl's movies (no, I don't watch her movies). I would be equally annoyed if I had to watch movie filled with pro-Sweden proganda for example.

I watched it yesterday and thought it was Clancy's worst effort on the big screen so far. I've enjoyed a few of his earlier movies but this one in no way, shape, or form compares to them. The acting really is terrible. The love story is as bad as it gets - Clancy just is no romance novelist. The logic of the movie is counter-intuitive... basic elements of military units (SAM defenses, C3I, combat range, weaponry choices, etc.) are so generalized or completely ethereal as to make some scenes nonsensical. It just wasn't worth the $4 price of the matinee. I recommend you all wait for it on the little screen.

This was one of the best thriller-type movies I have seen this year. Phil Alden Robinson is a truly great director. His "Field of Dreams" is definitely one of my top ten movies ever, and I hope he will get the chance to do a lot more, now that "Sum of All Fears" is a hit.

I personally thought the movie wasn't very good. Ben Affleck is not the right actor for Ryan's character. Also, I think the Baltimore destruction was done very poorly. They didn't really show much (probably so as not to bring up memories of 9/11 which is understandable I guess), but they never really mention how many people were killed, how much damage was done, even at the end of the movie, nobody seems to care that a major city was destroyed. Also, how is it that Affleck is able to go through the city that has just been nuked without worrying about the effects of fallout etc? I also didn't like how they managed to solve the puzzle as to who launched the attack. I don't think people that are smart enough to get Russia and the US to fight each other will use their real names when they purchase illegal arms or keep all of their information on one easily hacked computer. Anyway, the premise of the movie was great but I just don't think it was well done.

<<where do you live that a matinee is $4. for $4 i woudln't complain too much about this movie >>

Bellevue, Nebraska has the Twin Creek theaters with $4 matinees and $20 for the monthly passes. Yep, $20 gets you into a movie a day for the whole month. Obviously they charge out the ears for the snacks and drinks. I never go to the theater without first eating a full meal.

Of course, and they are very clean theaters. Bellevue is a quiet city of about 40000 surrounded on three sides by Omaha. Its funny that the big city theaters tend to run the same price for matinees but only one of them has the guts to run the monthly passes. They don't have near the gang bangers as Omaha, hence the ability to keep a nice, reasonably priced theater.

Hey, MadRat, I'm a fellow Bellevue resident. I've only been to Twin Creek a few times, but it is a pretty nice theater. I actually go to the AMC at Oak View mostly because, well, I work there and see the movies for free.
