Sun burns out in 200 years!?

I heard something on the radio about an MIT study saying the lifespan of the Sun was miscalulated, and it could burn out within 200 years. I was on my way out of my truck and did hear the rest of the program, and figured I check it out on the internet ... later. I can't find a thing about this supposed study. Was it a joke, a hoax? and I missed the punch line? Anyways, it seemed unlikely but I was interested anyway. Anyone else hear something along these lines?

We need to refuel the sun! We could build solar power plants to separate sea water into O2 and H2. Then build rocket ships to send the H2 to the sun!

And you always wondered who came up with the ethanol program.

Actually the theory thought to be true is that the sun is around midlife right now... giving it much, much more than 200 million years left. Something like 6 billion I think.

I don;t think the sun will be dead in 200 years ... but when you hear something like this on a nationally syndicated program you'd expect to find something about it on the internet, even if it's complete crap. I couldn't find anything.

Kind of scary to think that the sun, what we take for granite, could someday be gone. Wouldn't that mean the end of Earth?

I heard if the sun does burn out, it takes something like 30 years before earth feels its effects or something like that

Try 8 minutes, though I think the long lead up to the event would be fairly significant too.

The earth will be engulfed by the sun before it goes to dwarf status.

We wont be around for those 8 minutes

Maybe. I remember reading somewhere that it'll just get roasted like hell, and then be left as a crisped, freezing cinder (a really really BIG cinder). Though I do wonder if it wouldn't wind up melting or vaporizing when the sun goes all crazy red giant.

Yeah, Fritzo has it, we've got about 5 billion years to go from the sun. By that time, well, who knows what life will be on the planet. Something will probably have colonized the Moon, Mars, and maybe Mercury and Venus. The Voyager, Pioneer, and New Horizons probes will long since have been recovered, and returned to Earth, to be put in museums. Then those museums will decay over time and.....well, that's just in the next 10,000 years.

By 5 billion years, some kind of life form is going to have left this solar system.

Ya orly ya rly u no k

I believe in cyclic nature of life - humans will fuck up themselves with some bomb or disease , wiping out entire population, or suvivors would be dead shortly after. Then after some time a NEW life form emerges, like from worms n shit. Maybe from water again, then they will become "modernized" and fuck themselves up again

History repeats, so should life, no? Notice how water is cyclic u no.
