Well... a high SPF sunscreen is your best bet. The scalp is very, very sensitive. I was out in the sun for 30 minutes the other day before putting on sun screen and I have nice red head underneath my 1/8 inch hair. Even being the pasty geek that I am, you can't even tell I was out in the sun anywhere else but exactly on my scalp. It's like the burn starts right along my hairline, and stops right at the opposite end. If you're gonna use sunscreen, you gotta be pretty liberal with it. If you can't see some of it in your hair, you've probably got it too thin.

If you're doing yard work or out at a barbecue, get a bandanna or a hat. A bandanna can be quite comfortable and also keep your head from leaking sweat all over your face. When doing yard work, you can also dip it in water from time to time and it feels great. A hat works, but can give you funny tan lines and can give you a rash if you sweat into the band in the bill too much.

Get a hat. If you are not a hat person (you are probably only thinking of ballcaps), try some different ones out.
I hate ballcaps, but I got a "crushable" hat that has brims that buttons up on the sides. Kind of an Aussie thing, or maybe an explorer/traveler thing. I wear it all the times outdoors.
You don't have to worry about something taking it out of form.
i am not balding, but I need something for the outdoors, because my hair gets silly most of the time.

I shave my head... Live on Maui and golf every weekend...

I use SPF 30 on my melon whenever I'm going to be outside for more than an hour. It may be a solar panel for a sex machine but it's still subject to all the bad things about sun exposure.

LOL!
I'm so totally going to use that line...

Pump spray for the win! Make sure it is SPF 30 or better.

Just make sure you use something. My dad who tans very well didn't and now in his latter 60's has to go in for treatments. It is not only painfull but it looks like a rat nawed on his head for about 4 weeks after each treatment.

I used spray sunscreen yesterday for the first time, and it worked well on my scalp. I missed a few other places, though

Try spray lotion with the highest SPF you can find. If that irritates your pate, try the lotion for faces or for kids (the face stuff does not come in spray, but some of the kid stuff does).

Finally, whenever possible, wear a closed hat (not one made of mesh).

I am not worried about the SPF. It is easy to find one with enough protection.
The problem is, suntan lotion is oily.
You can't just spray anything on you head without making your hair greesy.
I am sure the industry must have created something with this in mind.

I use that bullfrog stuff since it wont all come off when you are sweating while working in the yard.

I will wear a hat on occasion, but generally the wind at our house makes a hat nearly impossible.

The rub on kind actually tends to dry out and turn a bit crunchy for me. I have thinning hair in the front and am reduced to rubbing sunscreen into my scalp.

Perhaps I should just buy a fedora, or a nice leather cowboy hat.
