So I've tried Ray Bans and Bolle's and I really like them but they won't stay up when I put them on top of my head. The folks at the eyeglass place I went to said that you're no supposed to do that with these kinds of sunglasses. Is this true? I've always had more active sunglasses (like Oakley's) in the past, I've never had sunglasses like these before.

oh, i thought purchasing sunglasses was like getting married the proper way... no test drives of the purchase until after the purchase...

Hehe, thankfully there's a little more leeway when picking sunglasses. You don't get trying 'em all out.

Another sunglasses thread?

You forget, the one I started is SO two weeks ago!

I have a big head, those one size fit all don't apply .

+1, it seems that most sunglasses look ridiculous on my face.

To the OP, I recently tried on just about ever brand of sunglasses I could find and in the end I settled on a pair of Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ's, love the fit, and the impact resistance since I'll use 'em at the shooting range as well.

That said the Maui Jims were some of the most comfortable sunglasses I'd ever worn, they just looked odd on me. I also got a chance to try on a pair of Kaenon's yesterday and they are VERY nice but very pricey as well. Great optical quality, very sturdy and very comfy. Expect to pay at least $200 for 'em though.

Did not like the Bolle, Revo, Costa Del Mar, or Ray Ban's I tried but everyone is going to have a different opinion on that.

What's the difference between the flak jackets and half jackets?

Waste of money. No need to spend more than $100.

Probably easier for you to see the difference on the oakley site. The lines are a little different along with the arms. The flaks seem to be a little taller and flatter while the halves come out more. When wearing ear muffs, I prefer less obstruction there and so I got the flaks.

The flaks are also listed as ansi z87.1. Halfs might be as well, but I prefer the look of the flaks anyway, so win-win.

Front of the frame on the Half Jackets is a little narrower IIRC. I tried them on as well and they didn't fit or look good on me.

What are some good (cheaper) places to buy sunglasses from?

I really like the way Ray-Ban Wayfarer's look but they just don't look right on my face. There was a slickdeal a few weeks ago when Ebay was selling them for $50 or something with is $80 less than MSRP and I know people occasionally get really good deals on Aviators for example.

I think I've settled on the CATS family but I don't want to spend $130 on them. Any idea where to get a better price?

It's really hard to fathom the cost of expensive sunglasses. I know there's a difference between polarized and non but in the end, I just can't believe it costs anywhere near the price of a pair to make. For example, exactly how much does it cost Oakley to produce a pair of polarized sunglasses? What's their cut... their margin?

A LOT.

One of our engineering departments at cal poly got to tour the oakley manufacturing center and at the end of the tour they offered the students the pick of their sunglasses...at 70% off.

The plastic framed glasses cost nearly nothing to make from what I've heard. You are definitely buying the brand.

In my case I bought them because they fit perfectly and were one of the few pairs that looked good on my rather large face.

Can someone answer this question for me?

I have a pair of $150 Polarized ray-bans (gray lens) bought from I think from Macy's so I know they are not fake. However I can barely tell that they are polarized, they look pretty much the same as any crappy pair of glasses.

My friend has a ~$200 maui jims with brown lenses that look amazing. Can see through water, glare is gone, colors look brighter etc...

Is this just the difference between brown vs. gray lenses or is it a difference in quality of the glasses? I'm looking to buy another decent pair (~100 bucks or so) and am curious if I can get the Maui Jim effect on Bolle's or Ray Bans. Of course I can't really tell when trying them on in sports authority...

$12 pair at BJ's. They do what they need to. Polarized, etc, etc. I figure they're eventually going to break anyways, so why do I need to spend more?

I got a pair of Oakleys last summer. I like them. I originally bought a pair of Ray Bans, but they were metal and ended up being way too heavy and left huge red marks on my nose that took forever to go away. The Oakleys stick to my face like they are glued on and don't leave any marks.

Definitely CATS 5000, now to pick which lens to go with the black frame and FIND A DEAL.

I just bought a pair of Bolle's that have excellent vision through the lenses and the frame is really lightweight but the way they sit on my face makes sweat stay along the frame line. Mind you I wasn't sweating in the mall when I tried them on but I may take them back to get the Maui Jim's. $150 but they were the shiznit.
