Ok, after a bit of research I've come up with the following. Assume unlimited budget, but I don't need something completely unreasonable (like a $2000 quadro fx). I do need support for 4 monitors at high rez (2048x) and good gaming performance when switching to a single monitor. Stability and performance are important, don't plan on overclocking.

CPU: Core 2 Duo X6800

Mobo: Asus P5W DH Deluxe - will probably get this from zipzoomfly unless newegg gets it back in stock soon

Case: Antec P180 Silver

PSU: PC P&C 510w

Memory: Corsair XMS2 2GB PC2 8500

GFX1: Sapphire Radeon X1900XTX (gaming, 2 monitors)

GFX2: Sapphire Radeon X850XT (2 more monitors)

HD1: WD Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM

HD2: Seagate Barracuda Perpendicular 320GB 7200 RPM

Optical: NEC ND-3550A

Any suggestions or compatibility issues, please let me know.

What 4 monitors are you getting? You know, at that range I'd think seriously about the Dell 3007. Call up dell customer service and haggle and you can get several hundred dollars off the price of it.

Oh, and realize that you are going to pay more than triple for that 6800 what you would for the 6600, and its no where near 3 times better.

if your insistant on the 6800 your going to pay man... if i had to buy conroe i would go with the 6600. best bang for the buck in the conroe department of CPUs.

well...if he is going to overclock it like a mofo, the 6800 is the way to go as it is unlocked...but it has to be EXTREME OVERCLOCKING for it to be worth it.

factor in that the only people that got the 4ghz or higher that i saw did it with phase change cooling..

He said he doesn't plan on overclocking.

You need an X850XT for 2D purposes??

EDIT: No OC means DDR2-533 memory is sufficient.

Well, it's pretty cheap and I don't feel like saving $50 or whatever in order to deal with legacy technology.

I guess I may consider OC, but not up to the point where it would effect stability. I'd probably add on a zalman to the CPU if I were to OC. Also will probably slide in a floppy drive.

Anyone know if the stock cooler on the x1900xtx from sapphire will need replacing as well?

Anything else guys? Any help is appreciated

It doesn't NEED replacing, but a vf-900 would certainly make it quieter.

VF900CU FTW!
I love this thing -- it's not only better than stock cooling (especially when volt modded) but its also near silent.

I think the PC P&C will be making enough noise that I'll get little benefit from that, I'm just wondering if it has overheating issues

IMO, you should get the PC P & C modded with a quieter fan.

4 30 inchers? are you retarded?

man, honestly with the budget you have you could build a much better machine.
For one thing, why get a P5W when you are getting an X6800. Sounds stupid to me... people get that mobo because it overclocks well, so they can overclock their E6600s. With an unlocked processor you dont have that problem, so if I where you I would wait for an nForce 590 Intel Editon board, and get that. Then get 2 7950 GX2 for quad SLI.
This way, when you want to use 4 monitors, you disable SLI. When you want to game, you enable SLI, and game on 1 of those 30 inchers... I think that should be enough.
I would go a little larger on your second hard drive. Im assuming its your storage HD, so you might want to go with a 500GB. And also feed the beast properly. Get an enermax galaxy 850W PSU.
Now thats a super conroe build!

I need this bought, shipped, assembled, tested and ready to go by mid-august. If theres a mobo that is out right now that you would suggest over the p5w, let me know.

2x 7950 in SLI are overkill for me, I'm fine with high res 2D on 4 monitors for everything but gaming.

I'll probably get a 3rd HD, so 2x 320gb seagate perpendicular.

Do you think a higher rated PSU is necessary here? After all, PC P&C rates theres at the level they operate, so about 20% less than other manufacturers. Also, if I do need to get an enermax, do you think I'll have problems fitting it into the case?

Thanks for the input.

crownjules: yes, I am. 4 monitors isn't enough actually, but I have other boxes and can use Synergy to get to their monitors.

how do you plan to put a X1900XT and a X850XT into that system? I am pretty sure that's not possible to do

Slightly overkill, but the recent models have a thermally controlled fan, which fixes the noise problem. Not the quietest PSU ever but quiet enough for any but low noise freaks.

You, uh, push them into the PCIe slots...

They're both pcie x16, and theres 2 slots. Theyre spaced apart enough, it shouldn't be a problem. Why do you think so?
