Basically I want to avoid having to back-up, so I'd like everything to be mirrored from one hard drive to another.

Well, if your motherboard doesn't have raid IDE (usually IDE3 and IDE4), then you need an addon raid card. The drives will have to be reformatted to dynamic. So, this means backing up any data you already have on the first HD.

Something I just remembered from the last windows install, is that windows will NOT run on a HD in a raid configuration.

Ok thanks, sounds like a pain in the ass. I guess I'll just buy a FireWire PCI card (any recommendations? would prefer to buy from NewEgg or Buy.com) and use my external Maxtor 80GB 5400 FireWire hard drive for backing up.

ok i just got off the phone with a totally useless hoebag CSR. she is the biggest moron ever. i told her that this drive is on sale starting august 18th, so if i place an order online right now, will i get it for the sale price of $99. this idiot is like i think u should wait to the 18th before u order. then i told her, well it's midnight, so technically it is the 18th. then i proceeded to ask her, does her database update pricing information according to EST or PST. she says PST. so i said if i order right now, and it shows up $110... as opposed to the $100 sale price, will i be credited back $10. she says no, and i have to order on the 18th. i told her again it was the 18th. then she rambles on about how she can't manipulate the price and that i won't get the instant rebate over the phone. i reminded her that i do not plan to order over the phone, but via the website. she rambles on about she can't change a price to one that does not exist... so i hung up on the dipstick. so i got a whole lot accomplished on that phone call...

not very hard but IMO raid 1 will make your 40 GB slower because it right the data to 2 HD's at the same time it will be even worse if they are on the same IDE channel

raid 1 always takes a performance penalty and if the drives are not the same model than the array is only as fast as the slowest HD than that is another hit

IMO several drives in RAID 0+1(requires 3 drives i think) could be what your looking for or RAID 5 (best solution but requires a lot more drives) but i'd say ur HD is pretty safe it is not an IBM 75 GXP and chances are 99% that you will get another PC before the HD dies

What do you expect from a company selling stuff like this for 10 bucks? Get people with customer service skills? They go for steep rates these days. All they got are their little scripts they read off.

Hey I just went to officedepot and it's giving me $109.99 still. What gives? Is anyone else getting this?
Also, hate to bother you guys, but I really tried yet can't find the $20 off $75. I would immensely appreciate it if someone could PM me a link. Thanks!

Alex

Edit: thanks Rossman and spanky, problem has been resolved.

FYI - For those of you looking for the $89.99 price, first you will need to have a local B&M selected as your shipping option so that thre OD.com real-time inventory system can check availability at that store. Once you select a local B&M as your delivery option, the online price will automatically adjust to the local advertised price. If you have direct shipment selected, you will never see the $89.99 price since this is a B&M only price and OD.com does not PM their own B&Ms. You will not get this deal with direct ship so don't waste your time unless you plan on PMing with your CC BVG program. . Also, most local OD B&Ms are picked clean of these 40GB drives from the recent OD deals and OD is not restocking them. If you are lucky enough to find one, this current deal is hot! Good Lick!

I think I've checked all (like 20 or so) OD stores in the Bay Area. They're all out. Anyone sees any store in BA with stock?

just add the $109 price to your cart. During check out, choose a store for pick up. It'll change the price if that store has it in stock.

Got my order through here in Kansas - Price does change when it gets to your cart. Not too shabby for $15 (tax included)

Too bad all those poor souls waiting in line tomorrow in the AM!!!

my store is 21210 Pikesville Maryland.

As much as I hate rebates. It does serve a purpose. Greedy bastards can't buy 100 of them so they can sell it on Ebay. I bought only one.

Just for the heck of it, I checked Pikesville and it shows OOS for me too. Maybe it's something wrong with my computer?
