Maxtor rebate form (front page) says good for model L01J040G. When you pull up SKU 368-121 at OD it shows model ST0154000U.

From the OD web site;

Item # 368121
Manufacturer # L01J040G
capacity 40GB
manufacturer Maxtor
model name ST0154000U

ST0154000U is the kit number for a retail 40 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM hard drive.

They've used that kit number for a couple years now, and inside the boxes there have been DiamondMax Plus 40, DiamondMax Plus 45, Diamondmax Plus 60, and D740x hard drives, all with different Maxtor model numbers.

When I did a search on this Model Number L01J040G, it came back to this drive. I still would like to know 100% for sure though.

That's fine. Get 8 of these 40GB drives and get a 3ware Escalade 7500-8 and RAID them together into a single 320GB logical drive.

Maybe he just forgot to put a at the end... and he has no idea what to do with the all space? With a fast CD burner I certainly don't. But who cares, MUST HAVE!

And it's not all that expensive either:

8 of the 40GB drives cost $80.

Hypermicro has the Escalade 7500-8 for $365.

So for $445, you get 320GB of storage running in 8-way RAID-5. I think that's pretty good.

This deal looks fishy: It seems the two rebates are same.......

Just go to www.maxtor.com and check the available rebates, you will find the same amount of $ with same time requirement as staples/officedepot is offering.

Although this one is different, they go to different address, but ....... who know???

Do you have that many relatives and/or friends that will let you use their addresses for the rebates?

Okay... so there's some technicality to be figured out.

But in theory it works.

Well, all I can say is... the rebates are processed by different companies (Parago for the Maxtor MIR and ExpressGroup for the OD MIR). One requires original UPC and one accepts photocopied UPC. Nothing in the fine print says you cannot submit both of them at the same time.

But, like many other deals on this forum, YMMV. I guess you can almost be sure that you'll get at least one of the rebates. But whether or not Maxtor or OD will decide to pull one of the rebates, no one knows.

My advice is: you should only make the purchase if you're okay with a $39.99 price for the hard drive (i.e. in case one of the rebates didn't make out.) If you absolutely must get it for $9.99 or that'll break your budget, then you probably shouldn't get it.

Unless someone could call Maxtor and OD next week to get some sort of guarantee that both rebates are valid. But I don't think that's going to happen.

Hey, does anyone know if compusa will let you use other companies coupons? cause if so, you could buy from them and use their current $25 off with a hard drive turn in, and then only use the one maxtor coupon. $15 instead of $10.

now the real question, will they let you use the coupon?

From FatWallet:

BOTH REBATE ARE ON THEIR WEBSITE NOW!!! SO THEY ARE DIFFERENT FOR SURE!!!

for those who think the two rebates are the same deal.... check this out. the office depot rebate coupon says that the rebate coupon must be postmarked by 9/7/02 and recieved no later the 9/14/02. the maxtor rebate coupon says that the rebate coupon must be postmarked by 9/21/02 and recieved no later then 10/5/02. so... would that be enough evidence to convince u that it's not the same deal?

If I have a 40GB 7200 in my Dell Dimension 4500 and I were to buy this 40GB 7200. How difficult would it be to mount them side by side and add some controller card so everything is mirrored from the Dell OEM hard drive to the new Maxtor hard drive?

Basically I want to avoid having to back-up, so I'd like everything to be mirrored from one hard drive to another.
