Ok maybe not that hot.

Best buy had an add this weekend (I don't know if this is local or not but it was for the CA bay area) for a Nokia 8265 for $24.99 after a $125 instant rebate!
Stock is limited and there are no restrictions, no contracts nor any activation required unless you buy 3 or more, just tell them you are an existing AT&T wireless user. This phone normally sells for $149 and at $25 it's a good phone to tide you over till the new GSM phones come out

The 8265 is the replacement for the 8260 and is pretty much the same phone with some minor differences.
It now has removeable faceplates
You can download 10 ringtones instead of 5
A very bright white blue backlight
and it's just a tad bit taller.

Type in your zip code here and the ad should be on page 19.

Awwww too bad its not GSM, That would be awsome if it were.. Never the less still a great find if you're an AT&T user who needs a small phone

have you bought this phone yourself? i'd be surprised that they'd let the phone go for that price without getting the comission off of an activation.

The 2 year agreement is only if you want the 3500 minute promotion.

And yes I have bought this phone at this price, in fact I've bought a total of 6!! (For my friends and I).
I didn't get any hassle and was not required to sign up for anything including a 2 year contract.

I'm telling you get them while you can!!

It's not the best phone as far as features but if you want something really small and AT&T (tdma) compatible nothing beats it!

But at the top it says:
Valid on phones $50.01 and up. Markdowns taken from regular prices.... Purchase of 3 or more phones requires in-store activation.

Which means that the savings come without activation on purchases of 1 or 2 phones...

Yep, however I bought four at one store and they didn't require any agreements, although they definitly had the right to.

Yeah I want to know that too. My 5190 says AT&T and it works on Cingular. I'd be all over this deal if it supports Cingular.

Edit: Where are you guys seeing the thing about 3 phones or more need activation? On my ad the only thing it says is that a 2-year contract is required. Maybe this deal varies from region to region

just came back from a Best Buy where I was denied. I was told that AT&t now requires that all phones be bought with in-store activation. However, another store I called (but didn't have them in stock), said it'd be fine w/o activation. So guess it's luck of the draw...

i'm pretty sure if you buy this phone you won't be able to use it on the cingular network. it comes locked to at&t, and unless they give you the unlock code (which they probably won't), you can't use cingular on it.

No you cannot use it on cingular's network. Phone are generally not cross compatible.

kalvnhobbz, I would talk to the manager because no where on the ad does it say activation required. Also AT&T doesn't care what other companies do with the phone or at what price they sell them for.

It looks like who ever you talked to pulled a fast one on you:|

8260/8265 is for at&t only, it uses TDMA

8290 uses GSM (sim card technology)

it does NOT work w/ cingular

maybe eastcoast, but you'd have to get a cingular contractor to MODIFY your phone (cingular uses TDMA in eastcoast)

Because cingular is GSM and ATT is TDMA... that is, until their new 2.5G network rolls out, which is now happening in various places throughout the country.

However, this phone is TDMA, not GSM. You're comparing apples to oranges.

It says RIGHT IN the ad "two year contract required". Anyone who is getting out of there without signing are getting some uninformed CSRs.

Btw, there seems to be some confusion. Cingular is GSM on the west coast, and TDMA pretty much everywhere else. You will NOT be able to buy this phone and activate it on cingular though, not even if you have tdma cingular, because at&t has "locked" the phone, so it can only be used on at&ts networks.

Again MJGunn, the ad says "requires two year activation" only because it refers to the national advantage rate plan for which you can only get the 500 minutes with the 2 year. (which really isn't true but that's a whole other topic)

You can verify this yourself if you look at the ad you will notice that in the balloon you will see ?? and then it's referenced to the small print where it says 2 year contract required.

Since this phone appears to be the 8260 with a few minor changes you may want to consider this information I saw at Cnet. There were a few comments like this one worth considering...

I am very disappointed in the overall performance of the phone. I was told by an AT&T store rep that these phones are notorious for reception problems.

My calls are constantly dropped. At the AT&T store I only had one bar for reception, then none. But the AT&T Rep's phone, Motorola V60, had all 4 bars for reception. My wife has the same phone and experiences the same problems.

Most of the time when I use the phone, I spend most of the time playing, hello are you there? with the other party.

I don't recommend this phone. AT&T was not willing to do anything for me to trade up for a different phone. So I left them.

While the 8265 is an updated 8260, it is not the same phone and it has not exhibited the same faults.

But yes the 8260 definitly had some problems!

i have the 8260, they seem to last for about 8-10 months then you'll start to get reception problems. had to get my phone replaced twice because of this (was still under warranty)

You're absolutely right, and I apologize. I just double checked the ad, and while at first glance it looks like a 2 year contract is required, its not. I'm shocked BB is willing to let these phones out for only $25. One thing though, I was in BB yesterday, and I stopped and looked at the cell phones. For some reason the 8265 was marked as 49.99 instead of 24.99, and I read the fine print and it said, pretty much, activation required, if you don't activate, they add $200 to the price of the phone. That tag, and this ad, contradict each other, but, it seems, the reps follow the ad.
