SUPER HOT: Boston Acoustics DIGITAL Media Theater speakers $55 shipped

There's a place that is selling several sets of Boston Acoustics Digital Media Theater speakers, fixed price buy-it-now on eBay for $40 + $15 shipped. These are absolutely FANTASTIC computer speakers...I haven't heard better computer speakers...And they support a SPDIF digital connection from your sound card. (I think the claim in the auctions that you HAVE to use a digital connector is not correct).

These are refurbished by Boston Acoustics. They are also the later version (revision 1).

Anyway, if you need computer speakers, you cannot go wrong with these...They'll blow ANYTHING else you could buy for $55 out of the water...They originally sold for around $300, incidentally.

Note that these are BETTER than the ones that CompGeeks was selling, briefly, for around the same amount, because these are the digital version (support digital input; don't know if there are other differences).

I still use a set of these from an old Gateway PC with my main rig! You're right, they are absolutely fantastic speakers. As a matter of fact, I sold a set of Klipsch 4.1s to go back to them. The Klipsches were overkill (never turned them up loud enough, never used surrounds), and I'm not a huge fan of horn tweeters. For $55, these can't be beat!

I have the analog version of these speakers how different are these from the ones I have.
I have the BA635
I know the subwoofer definitely looks different.

These are definetly good speakers for the money, but I just ordered the MONSOON PLANAR MEDIA 14 from Dell, I like to try a newer technology.

These are WAY WAY WAY better than the BA635s. The BA635s are OK for an inexpensive set of speakers. The Digital Media Theater speakers are high end computer speakers. Again, these were > $300 speakers when they came out, and they were NOT mispriced...

As for newer technology, unlike computers and most other computer peripherals, speaker technology is rather mature and improvements, if any, are mostly made at modest increments. The cost of a good sounding set of computer speakers has definitely decreased in the past several years, but the Digital Media Theater speakers are still head of class quality.

The thing that has aged for these speakers is the move to 5.1 setups and the fact that, with respect to surround sound, these speakers only decode the older Dolby surround modes.

If you are addicted to 5.1 at your computer, you'd need to supplement these speakers with some surrounds or go for a complete 5.1 out-of-the-box setsup. However, if you are like me and don't care about 5.1 at your computer, then I you aren't going to find anything better than this set unless you spend GOBS more money and go for really high end stuff. If you're not about to spend several hundred bucks for your speaker setup, THIS is your best buy.

These units are refurbished by Boston Acoustics. These speakers are AWESOME. THESE ARE DIGITAL SPEAKERS, MUST HAVE DIGITAL SOUND CARD.

what kind of connection does it take? SPDIF?

Yup...Takes SPDIF connection for digital input. The digital media theater speakers I have seen also have an analog input if you don't have a digital output soundcard...I guess it's possible there's another variant that doesn't support analogue input, but I doubt that...

Got these for ~$45 if IIRC 2 years ago on sale at BB. Set them up that afternoon and went right back to Best Buy... to buy another pair!

EDIT: The speakers have BOTH digital and analog inputs on the subwoofer.

if you bought 2 of these...could you set them up as 4.2? Also...does anyone know if my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card has digital outputs? I think it's a digital sound card, but I'm not sure.

Yes you could get 4.2 if you use the front/rear analog outputs on your sound card and buy two sets of the BA's.
The TBSC does support digital out via the versajack. You will need an adapter cable though, as the BA system uses a spdif connector but the versajack is a 1/8" mini plug.

Nope, the BA745s are NOT the same speakers. They are not even the same speakers without the digital input. They are MUCH cheaper BA speakers. The MediaTheater speakers were BA's top of the line computer speakers, and definitely the best sounding computer speakers BA made...

BA also made speakers called "MicroMedia Theater" or something like that. Don't be confused: Those are also not nearly as good. You want the Digital Media Theater or Media Theater speakers. Those are the good ones...

Got mine today. Actually, I did as well as five other people I work with. Of the six sets, FIVE are defective. The subwoofers on all of them emit a loud 60 cycle hum. Only one set works properly...After the first couple of defects, we started thinking it was our power outlet. But nope, one set worked properly to prove the others were defective.

Grrr...Haven't contacted the seller yet, but terms say buyer has to pay shipping back. So this deal has gone COLD!

(But if seller holds to paying shipping back, they are gonna wind up with five negative feedbacks...)

Check your speakers as soon as you get them...

Did you connect them to a SPDIF or with the adapter? Mine should be here this afternoon. I bought a SPDIF adapter for my 8rda+ for this. I'm hoping it works. I talked to those guys 2 days ago and he told me that everyone where he works uses them. I hope mine work.
