Yeah, they make great omlettes. :-\

A 6 in 1 media reader does enough, especially for less than 30 bucks. People buy window kits for 30 bucks and while they look cool, really aren't functional compared to this thing.

Even if they were, it'd be fine for me to get a heads up on the good prices they have!

If I save about 20 bucks on something, I'd be more than happy to have them around. haha.

Warning: Make sure to check the wiring on your motherboard before plugging one in. Some motherboards wire up the USB headers weird. Its probably a 80% chance its ok, but I'd check first. You can find pinouts in your motherboard manual, and double check it against the plug pinouts on the device.

One example: I purchased a great case from newegg (one of the EverCase ones, very nearly the ideal small cheap case IMHO) that had 2 USB front ports. The wiring for the plug was differant than my motherboard. All you have to do is take the plug from the card reader, use a small knife tip, or a straight pin and gently pry up the little tab (gently, dont break it) holding one of the pins in, pull the pin out and switch it with another. Pretty easy, only 5 mins of work if a change is needed.

I've been looking for one of these readers with a pcmcia card reader too. I've seen them on a computer at walmart's photo department. Anyone know where I could get one?

sorry for the late reply. had to go on a trip with the family. well, the 6in1 usb 2.0 plugs directly into the motherboard. there will be two wires coming out of the 6in1 usb2,0. both wires needs to be plugged into the motherboard, because one wire is for the 6in1 reader while the other is for the extra port in the front panel. yea, i found a lot good deals from newegg from this site... so i figure i'll tried them out since all the user from AT says their good... anyway... i'm gonna search for some more new toys on that site... later~

Umm...hmm...well...if you check the banner ad at the top of (just about?) every page in the forum, you will see that NewEgg ALREADY advertises here. I doubt they would post an ad in the Forum as "Joe Consumer."

Does the CF card go in right-side up?
That's the annoying thing about my Soyo 6-in-1 reader is the CF goes in upside-down. That, and it's way too easy to shove the card in tilted.

Anyone get this to work in a Dell Dimension 8250? I can't find USB pin outs on the motherboard, and Dell tech support doesn't even know what a USB pin out is! Sorry for the WOB, but if anyone can provide advice, please email me at tech-at-busdepot-com . I'd be really appreciative! Otherwise I may have to send the unit back or ebay it.

I have a question on this thing. I noticed in this pic that the USB mobo header plug is one piece, not "multiple little pin pieces" like some others.

My mobo, Epox 8RDA+ is well-known to have a different pin configuration on the mobo; ala if you hook the pins up wrong you fry your mobo and the USB device.

Anyone care to comment on using this Apacer device on the Epox 8RDA+, please?

*EDIT*
Oops. that's the wrong pic. But still, even on the correct pic, I don't see the pinouts. Same question applies, please.

One other thing. "MS" is Memory Stick as in Sony Memory Stick, correct?

If it's like the picture you posted, your can change the wiring of the connector easily. Just behind the metal showing on the are little tabs holding the wires in the connector. Lift up the tab with a small screwdriver like the precision or jewelers screwdrivers you can get at Radio Shack, and the wire will pull right out. simple rearrange them to suit your motherboard. I used to have to do the with some audio cables from Compaq that were wired differently when using them with other sound cards. Take a minute or 2 is all.

Edit - A steak knife will do in a pinch. Just has to be thin and come to a point. But be careful not to cut yourself or the tab off (not that I've done that or anything).

Excellent. Thank you for your detailed reply.

Smart Cards or SmartMedia? This device reads SmartMedia which is a very different thing than smart cards. Either one can be easily found though. For smart cards - search on "iso 7816". Or go to smartcardsupply.com though I don't think they deal in small quantities. The other is easily found all over.

Stupid thing only works with headers!!! :|

I just got one of these, but the thing that pissed me off about it was that it only had usb headers, no usb plugs. Too bad the maxtor usb 2.0 card I bought here only had an internal plug... So I cut up an extra usb cable (cutting off the plug + few inches of wire,) popped the clips on the apacer header, and soldered the bare wires on to the pins in a way that I could reinsert the pins into the header. (I could have just cut the header off and atached the bare wires, but I wanted to save it for when I wanted to upgrade from my bx board.) After that it works great, soooo much faster than usb 1.1.

All in all, a nice unit, but they should include a usb plug adapter or something for those without the newest mobo's with internal headers. I didn't mind hacking it, but I can't imnagine too many people would.

As far as I know, all the motherboards that have "external" USB ports have them. When I say external, I mean the ones that have 2 or 4 extra USB ports on a little metal insert that takes up a expansion slot. If you have a motherboard that has just 2 built in USB ports in the back next to keyboard/mouse ports, that is NOT a header.
Some motherboards have only 2 on the back and an extra header on the motherboard for more USB ports but dont include the little metal bracket thingy to use them. Basically a header is just a row of pins on the motherboard (about 10 of them, 2 rows of 5) next to each other, and they look similar to a row of jumpers.

Looks like this might be a solution, then. But which wire on the apacer plug goes to which wire on the cut-up USB cable?
