That's unfortunately true. Those super-cheap cut-rate licenses for students at a particular school, are only (supposedly) valid, while those students are still at that school, and only while MS still has a valid agreement with that school.

They are not equivalent to "retail purchase" licenses, not by a long shot.

That's interesting. I did not know that. I guess MS will grant you an upgrade to a permanent license, for any of "your" software that you purchase as a student, if you graduate from that school. Interesting incentive to graduate.

This is her last year there and she's not graduating... Does this mean that they supply a list of revoked licenses to M$ at the end of the school year or something? Does this mean that after she leaves the school my Office XP will stop working? Or does it just mean it will work, but not legally.

My guess (IANAL), is that if she leaves the school, but does not graduate from said school, and therefore is not granted a "permanent" license to said software.. if she does not delete the software, in accordance with the revocation procedures specified in the license, then it is no different than if she simply downloaded the software off of the internet for free and installed it. Whether the product itself continues to function on her PC, is a function of whatever anti-piracy mechanisms there are. If those products require "activation", she will (most likely), not be able to re-activate the products if needed (perhaps due to a system re-install), and if those products "phone home" to verify their licensing and activation status, then they will probably disable themselves.

Good luck, MS doesn't give away anything for free, only for "free". Get it?

I used to handle the licensing for UMBC.

Since we have a site license for the campus, we are allowed to install them on all of our computers without having to register them.

For students, i believe they are allowed to purchase licenses that cheap and can only use them for the time that they are enrolled at UMBC. They're basically paying to borrow the software

Heh, me too. Of course, I see you go to Cal Poly also. I was lucky and I bought a copy of Office last year at the old price. Anyway, the only for sure way to know if your school has a special deal with Microsoft, go to your bookstore and find someone at the tech desk. They'll put the more expensive boxed version on display and have the cheaper disks only stuff behind the desk.

Which cal poly are you talking about? I goto pomona and I bought my Office Xp and Xp pro for $20 each. havent checked out their new price.

No we don't. Look here.

We do get reduced prices ($73 for Office XP Pro)... but its far from free. They do bill your student account, however--which is nice if you have a scholarship.

My g/f goes to UTA. 7$ for Windows XP. It would be great to be legit but anyone know what this note means exactly?
I'm gonna bet it is pretty much what UTD has (thats where I go, also part of UT Systems). Its a pain in the butt but basically you bring your latest tutition reciept, some cash, and you fill out this form. At least at UTD all the software is holographic Microsoft CDs with Serials on the back of the case. Also they are clearly NFR copies. Also you cannot get more than 1 copy per set of software.

My friend bought OfficeXP for $150...good thing she didn't open the box because I told her she could get the academic version at our school for $8...so I saved her $142, but she still wouldn't go out with me

Hmm... I setup that MSDNAA web interface for my department and quickly brought it down. The thing sucks. You "import" users by text file, then you can't even see what users are in the database.

Anyway, Free's good for anyone!

Partially it's an incentive to graduate ... but really it's an agreement between the school and MS that reaffirms that MS is giving crazy concessions on their software to students and within that agreement it's on principle that these students are held to "student expectations" to graduate .... eventually.

If a student signs up for one semester and leaves after that and during that time purchases potentially 3-5k worth of retail software for 100-200 bucks - well that kinda violates the spirit of going to school and getting some consideration for your student lifestyle even though you've paid big bucks for education. It's kind of a violation of the two-way street relationship between the school and MS of which being a student is part of.

Something like that anyways.

I don't have a scholarship and we do get them all for free except Office programs... All you need is to register for MSDN thing... It's not just for CS majors, I am not a major yet but I still downloaded them all. I don't have the link in my favorites right now, but all you need is to register for an account. Then you can download OS's, .NET stuff and programs like visio and publisher.. PM me if you want the link, I can find it
