if you use media that is unknown to the drive, be prepared for 1x (60minute) burns. but you can flash it with the H2H firwmare and set it to burn unknown discs at 2x or 4x instead. i'm using the cheapo sonic 1-2x from Shop4tech burning at 2x with pretty decent/good results.

dang, i got in on this deal, but just got the drive, i'm gonna pay like $8.50 after $5 shipping and tax...I wish I had added these items to my cart!!! I'd cancel my order and try again but I don't want to fubar the deal, plus my credit card is almost maxed, and I don't think I've got enough available for 2 transactions if they both tried to go through tonight.

Can't complain about a $8.50 dvd burner though

was researching this drive and found this post on Slickdeals:

Whoah there.. 4x burning takes ~15 minutes for me, 8x ~8-9 minutes. The difference is minimal when you consider the amount of time it takes to rip and transcode.

rip time: ~15 mins, depending on quality of disc
transcode, ISO write : ~90 mins (I think.. I never really sit around and pay attention)
burn: 15 min @ 4x, or 8 min @ 8x

The time saved from 4x - 8x to is negligible to me unless I already have a transcoded ISO on my HD.

Yes, you can use 1 drive to read and 1 to write with DVDShrink if you have Nero installed. I'm not sure this will work if you only have Nero Express (packaged with this drive).

Went through. I ordered mine much earlier yesterday, had to keep refreshing to get rid of the errors. But the dvd burner should be coming sometime today, according to the UPS tracking number they gave me.

I knew DVD Burners would be Free AR soon enough

That site mentions it's only for Toshiba 5112/6112 drives...

this maddog drive is a toshiba 5112...

No on the firmware, and I also got the Toshiba 5112.
Anybody use the 'Nero'(Express, etc.) oem software that came with it? Is it horribly neutered or is it worth installing?!?

put it into an external FireWire enclosure and it's recognized by Mac OS X as Apple-supported for burning.

some info for anyone you know with a Mac who needs a cheap, compatible drive.

is there any such thing as external FireWire enclosure for windows. I have a sony pc and it does not have any free bays and also cannot remove the CD drive that came with the PC due to case design, have to buy an usb dvd writer if I have to use it. external FireWire enclosure sounds like a good idea.
