You guys are going about this all wrong...tell your lady that the engagement should be a commitment from both parties so if you're gonna buy her a diamond ring, she should give you a symbol of her committment (i.e. Tag Heuer watch in my case). Also tell her that the committment should be equal, thus the symbol be equal in value. This enables you to give her a smaller diamond and you still get a watch, camera, computer equipment, etc....just don't trade or sell the item.

Better ask for a Rolex. I don't suppose you can find a Tag Heuer with or anywhere close to that price tag.

That would work, unless you have a GF that's traditional to the end. In that case, SHE pays for the wedding, YOU pay for the ring and then YOU pay for the rest of your life afterwards . . . marriage, what an institution.

DEBEERS is EVIL! How many kids do you think died in Congo last year alone? 3 million. Most of them work in these slave gold and diamond mines and die from malnutrition and being worked to death. George Bush Sr. runs Barrack Gold, one of the notorious gold companies in latin america and africa as well. The british own 90% of the resources in Africa, it's no joke there's a genocide there. Welcome to an imperialistic world government my friends. =(

Man, do I feel lucky after reading about some of the gf's here. Last year, I got my girl a new titanium mtn bike frame for her birthday. I let her pick out the components and get them herself. Of course, I then built it up for her. She considers it to be the absolute best present that she has ever received.

She'd smack me upside the head if I spent bucks on a ring. hmmmmm $2000+ for something that serves no real purpose? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a symbol of your dedication to each other. (but more importantly a status symbol for those who place importance on that kind of thing) Yippee skippy. If you need a ring to remember your commitment, well.....

Oh yeah, we're in our mid-30's and we've been together for 5 years. We're not talking about a young kid here that might change her opinion later. And actually we do have rings. We spent $25 apiece on Telegraph in Berkeley. So we do have the symbol. But we can find much, much better uses for that kind of coin.

Diamonds have to be one of the biggest con jobs in history.

all women will do is rip your heart out. i know it just happened to me. so now i am sitting here with no money, a platinum setting, and a broken heart. if anyone is interested in a size 7 platinum solitaire setting (no diamond) that is brand new and cost $435, I will sell it for $135 and mail it for free. i can send a pic if interested. it is for a diamond about .50 - 1.1 ct this is a simple and elegant setting that i thought my girl would cherish forever, but she dumped me before i could afford the diamond.

<< Llocutus - interesting point: when MS monopolizes the market, everyone cries FOUL, but when DeBeers does that, it's called smart business >>

Here's a link that will open your eyes about DeBeers and the diamond trade!!

NPR recently ran an entire series on the international diamond trade. DeBeers was singled out one afternoon and let me tell you, the US government no longer consider DeBeers' business practices "smart" by any means. That is why NONE of the DeBeers executives ever set foot in the US. They are too afraid of anti-trust litigation.

I also learned some nice information that I immediately passed on to my wife. Several decades ago when diamonds were dirt cheap (DIRT CHEAP), DeBeers strengthened their cartel and then hired a powerful marketing firm out of New York. That firm came up with the "A Diamond is Forever" campaign, which is the most successfuly marketing campaign in history. Do you guys remember Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds are a girl's best friend?". Well, DeBeers paid her to sing that and lots of other stars to wear diamonds to make diamonds in style and mainstream in America. They set out to change American custom and style and they succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

Think about it: Why are diamonds so expensive? You can't eat them. You can't drink them. You can't breath them. They are NOT rair by any means. They don't DO anything. Yet, they are as expensive as Dodge Vipers because DeBeers has spent decades tying their plentiful, inanimate, COLORLESS (LOL, the LESS color, the more money??), shiny rocks to THE most important event of your adult life: engagement.

And guys have been picking up the tab ever since.....

So, in closing, if you are considering dropping $15000 on a diamond ring, buy a new blue car damnit and a matching sapphire ring instead! She'll like those a LOT more I guarantee it!

Here is a wholesale diamond price guide, so you can see just how badly you are getting ripped off:
Wholesale diamond list
This shows that the Ross Simons 1.85 carat, G, VS2 should wholesale for $5300 per carat, or $9805.

$18855.00 is not a bad markup for their "sale" diamond!

Keep in mind that the industry standard wholesale list (Rapaport) already has a 20% to 30% cushion built in to their "wholesale" prices. This list is probably the same. The Rapaport list costs money to buy, but your jeweler should show you his copy.

BTW, here is an alternative to paying big bucks for diamonds. Just don't screw it up like this guy did!

cycloscott,

Come to think of it, there is not too much justification for a titanium mountain bike frame either.
You can argue superiority, but does she really NEED a $2000 titanium frame, or does it just look very cool on her finger?

It's all in the eye of the beholder!

Awesome guide! I feel REALLY happy now about how much I paid my sister's friend who is a diamond distributor. Always wondered how well he did for me.

Wow, A bunch of geeks gathered around a computer internet site, talking about how they hate women, what an ephiphany.

IMHO - In the end, you will all fall to your knees and beg for forgivness (and/or Mercy)

EDIT: love how the site say "in stock" be kinda scared if they were "Sold Out"

Forcesho,

Dump that golddigger. She's taking you for a big time ride. Find yourself a woman that supports you through school, pays every other time you go out, and would be satisfied with a .5 - 1.0 carat ring (even better no ring at all). I'm still trying to figure out why I dumped mine that fit that profile.

Women who want a big ring, just want something to brag about to all their materialistic brainwashed friends, and the ring will just be the beginning. That's not the type of woman you want. There's no woman worth that, no matter what they do for you... because you can always get whatever it is they do for you for much much cheaper. And if she is just so damn good looking, it's just a matter of time before she will cheat on you, or her looks will fade and you'll be left with a high maintenance wash out. In which case, do youself a favor... dump her. You'll either be happy to be rid of here (eventually), or she'll get a much needed attitude adjustment. Either way, you win.

Oh, and why in the world would you ever even think about buying a girlfriend a car? :Q You buy it and give it to her, it's hers my friend, even if she dumps you the next day. If she were your wife and the family needed another car, that's a different story. But a girlfriend, hells no!

And if you must, as someone else mentioned, try moissanite. It's supposedly the shizzy.

I'm really sad to hear that some ladies are really wrapped up in this crap, I had a hard time affording my wife's ring(under 3/4, but nice quality), she's a petite woman so the ring looks really good on her, I had her try on around one carat and it looked rather odd because of her small hands..I guess I'm just really lucky that my wife likes her ring and plays TAC OPS with me! Woot, being married @ 23 isn't quite so bad at all I guess. Good luck to all you peeps looking at this sorta stuff, just wait til you plan your wedding. You will start to consider going to the courthouse....
