man diamonds piss me off. My serious girlfriend wears this ring thats encursted with diamonds given to her by her grandmother. The thing is easily worth 5-6000 and she wears it ALL the time. Its her everyday casual ring.

What really pisses me off is that I have to spend like 7000 bucks just so I can beat her every day casual ring when I decide to pop the question. Sucks!

have too ?
Man, you DON'T HAVE to do anything! You either CHOOSE to go along with it (and wind up broke while doing it ) or you risk
loosing your gf (which may actually save you in the long run, since she is probably very high maintenance).

Rhody,

Does anybody need a $2000 bike frame??? ( I only paid $850 for it ). And do I really need the 7 bikes that I ride??? I could probably get by with one or two.

I look at them as tools. And finely crafted ones at that. Three of my bikes are custom built specifically for me. I ride them hard, and they handle just the way I want. And they certainly don't ride like a $150 Huffy from Costco. I certainly wouldn't be able to race and perform as well as I do without the tools (bikes) that I own. Now that my girlfriend is racing, she can use (need?) all of the advantages that a quality frame provides as well.

Come to think of it, I don't even own a ti frame. All of my rides are steel (light, strong, but certainly not cheap). But I put in about 6000 miles on my bikes last year alone. I think I've gotten my money's worth. My vote, I'm obviously biased, is that you buy the best tool for the job at hand. In my case, that includes spending a couple of thousand bucks (maybe more) for a top-quality bike.

The best way to get a deal it to get a part-time job at a jewelry store. My wife works for one and got here ring around cost. Ended up being over 60% off of retail. Blew away any price I have found on the web or anywhere else by FAR!

evolution of marriage

stoneages - get large club, find wife
middle ages - the wifes family pays you (dowry) to marry their daugter
1969 to 89 - a mutual union of equal partners
1989 to present - your wife makes as much as you do at her job plus she gets your entire salary too.

diamonds are functional drill bit tips, other than that they are entirely worthless.

if you play a loser in life, it is only because you willingly accepted the part.

Interesting. Although... this is certainly not a "hot" deal for us non-millionaires. The OTHER tips in the thread are pretty hot. Thanks guys.

If any of you live in Maryland go to the Jewelry Factory in Bethesda. They make their own rings, bracelets...etc. And they guarantee that the jewelry they sell is worth double than what you're paying for it. I bought a nice diamond pendant and diamond bracelet for hella cheap. For the hell of it, I went to Shaw's Jewelers and they no doubtily appraised it double than what I paid for it!!! You can't beat it.

Lets see... ~$1100/month childsupport and daycare, * 12, 13200 a year, 14 years, $184,800....

$18855.00 price per diamond, 9.8 diamonds....My ex could get one of these diamonds for everything finger, and have one on one thumb and still have enough room for some other guy to get her one for the other thumb! I will make sure to email this thread to her.

Where was that link for free condoms anyway...

I explained to my current girlfriend that if she wants a diamond she better start saving...

The whole precious stone market is a scam. Every stone is different and GIA ratings are still someone's opinion (even if they aren't lying about the quality ratings). Unless you take the time to learn how to appraise a stone yourself, you are likely to get screwed. It takes a trained eye, a little knowledge and the right tools to evaluate a diamond, so Joe Consumer wouldn't know quality from crap when it's sitting right under his nose. Since people are conditioned to shop by GSA ratings, jewellers can say the quality is whatever they want to to drive up the price of the stone. And, trust me, every jeweller is looking to maximize the return on their investment. Wouldn't you?

Always get an unbiased appraisal from somewhere else before buying, especially if you are clueless about appraisal. A couple of buying tips; you are guaranteed to get screwed if you buy from a store in a mall; always look at a diamond away from the bright halogen lights (best is to look at it under flourescent lights); ask the jeweller if you can borrow his loop, or, even better, his microscope. Even if you don't know what the hell you are looking for, he still might get worried that you do. Try to find a used diamond from and estate sale. You may be able to get it a bit cheaper and, it's not like they break or go bad.

BTW, this can work to your advantage. If your chick wants a 3K stone, find one with a decent color, but with inclusions and a poor cut. You can pick that up really cheap. Still looks like a 3K diamond to her, but it's less brilliant and has no resale value. She probably won't ever know the difference. I guess it's true what chicks say...size does matter.

As already mentioned, aside from being used as cutting tools, diamonds are useless.

Women who require you to buy them a diamond (especially a large one) ... are just as useless. Wait, more so, because they don't even make good cutting tools.

Do yourself a favor, tell your woman you won't be buying her a diamond. If it doesn't matter, you've found one of the few good ones. If she won't marry you without one, then throw that one back and keep fishing.

>>Luckily, my now wife didn't care that much about this - a nice .5 carat did the trick.

Ditto. Luckily my fiance as a small (5.5) ring size. Even a 1.25c would be HUGE. I bought a killer .52c at a fair price ($2K out the door) and all is well.

RING -- GIA CERT D COLOR

Getting the D color (best possible) was a big plus. The GIA cert was for peace of mind.

If you are going to drop $1Ks of dollars on a woman:

A.) be sure you are ALREADY MARRIED ---> wouldn't you feel stupid if you broke up a couple months/years down the road and blew all that money on some girl when you could have spent it on your future wife/kids

B.)Buy implants for her or some other cosmetic surgery ... at least you both will enjoy it more than some stupid rock on her finger.

Uhh, let's think here. By my reckoning, buying your GF a rock worth a lot of cash could get you A LOT of benefits (at least while the initial euphoria lasts).

If you have to pay for those "benefits", you can get them a lot cheaper. But you should never have to pay for those "benefits". If your woman tries to hold out on those "benefits" and use such "benefits" as a weapon or bargaining chip, just do what I have always done... in a very matter of fact way, tell them you can always get those "benefits" somewhere else. Of course, I'm not married, so be sure to get a good pre-nup before using that one on your wife. Who invented this marriage scam anyway?

Agreed!

BTW: Yes, those benefits generally are obtainable without the ring. However, the ring seems to engender a little more frequency and enthusiasm in provisioing of the benefits--especially after the relationship is pretty much a long-term one. Unfortunately, the impetus provided by the ring is only short term. The downside as well, depending on the reason the ring is given, is also the equivalent of a ball and chain. Therefore, the lesson is that nothing is for free, and as the guy, you end up paying one way or another for a LONG time if you're not careful.

One can learn all of life's little lessons by browsing thruogh this thread. Anyhow, i got my gf a smal tiny diamond on a silver ring. In fact, it's a real estate ring. Bought it from a good friend who resells jewelry. It's real, and that's all it matters. Then again, I prefer small boobs over big fakes ones. It's all about personal theories.

Yes, I'm a newbie... yes, I'm female... and yes, I'm in the process of getting my graduate gemologist degree but... FWIW...

If a woman wants diamonds or anything else she can always do what I did and get a career and get them herself. I am motivated enough and determined enough to make sure my kids have what they need and that if I want something I have my own means to get it. My soon-to-be ex-husband would have better luck getting alimony from ME than the other way around, and I wouldn't take it if it was offered because I can take care of myself and my family

The best information on diamonds can be found at the Gemological Institute of America; there are sections with information on buying diamonds and jewelry. There is also legal information HERE at the Federal Trade Commission website that details the legal definitions and requirements for diamonds, gold and all other gemstones and precious metals. The best defense against fraud is an educated consumer. There are also some books by Antoinette Matlins that are superb; they're available at the larger online bookstores.

Now about that whole size thing... the same rules apply to diamonds - it's not quantity, it's QUALITY. I wear diamonds because it's my business and they're good advertising... but I wear smaller diamonds of better quality. I'm not into the whole "bigger is better" thing, because it just ain't so I'd rather have a piece of jewelry with a lot of good quality melee diamonds (melee = diamonds under .17CT, usually .05CT or less, most often used for pavé setting or channel setting) than one large mediocre quality diamond. And to be brutally honest my preference leans toward rubies anyway!

Relationships are about emotional invenstment, not financial investment. If the emotional investment isn't enough material gifts sure aren't gonna help!

It's only my .02
