Do some research also at pricescope on the forums and cut advisor.

Just purchased a diamond from whiteflash a month ago (she said yes). Awesome quality and cut for a fair price.
The hearts and arrows cut (AGS 000) is amazing, got tons of compliments from jewelers when we were running around pricing/picking a setting.
Really shines even in low light.

An even better deal, especially for you New Yorkers, is to somehow find a connection to a diamond distributor or wholesaler who sells to the stores and purchase from them directly. I bought a diamond from one of my sister's friends and ended up saving a TON of money. Of course, this was six years ago, but the exact same diamond (at least with almost identical properties and parameters as on our cert.) on pricescope is running well over 100% more than what I paid ($14000 vs $6500).

I don't think diamond prices have doubled in 6 years (have they?).

There is no way I would pay two months salary for a diamond. Obviously that's a BS DeBeers thing. I can't believe they foist that on people and a lot listen. This whole competition among women regarding diamonds is such a load of crap too--annoying . . .

Maybe over the phone or in person they may be better, but their web based selection is among the crappiest I've seen. I did a simple search on 1.5-2 carat diamonds and no other parameters, and there was a VERY limited selection of upper end size/color/clarity combo diamonds.
