Sure, why not... That's what Steve did! It would be nice if Steve would simply follow his own words of wisdom, and stop wasting Anandtech bandwidth. You DID say that, did you not Steve?

Thanks for the great article.
I was actually using a lot of sarcasm when I stated the above. Of course there is no conspiracy.
It was only meant to prove that you don't need state of the art, high dollar equipment, to overclock AMD's.
I've used an 8kha+ for months, and recently tested a 8k3a, hoping it would replace the 8kha+
My tests showed the 8kha+ was actually faster at the vcore and fsb I like to run at (166MHz - 171 MHz).
So I kept the 8kha+ and dumped the 8k3a. Will wait for next chipset before upgrading. Perhaps KT400?

LOL, ok, well thanks for the kind words!

That 8K3A+ issue is due to the 1/5, 2/5 PCI/AGP divider. We actually wrote about it here if you're interested.

The deal is lost...

No it is not, newegg has $68 AMD XP 1600 CPU with the same manufacturer part number, AX1600DMT3C, as the one you claimed to be Agoia only a few days ago. Is it or is it not, anybody's guess, just like before. It is of course $2 more than TCWO XP 1700 which would be very popular with Italian overclockers, so I guess the deal is still on in this hemisphere.
I'm glad to help you keeping it up since otherwise the title might just get overlooked.

And for RobTV: I actually know what steppings TCWO has, if you ask me nicely, I might tell you. It might look very attractive to you, for it is a "good" core.

Whoever wants the thread to go away, stop responding. If it bothers you, don't read.

GC68 was claimed to cost $6 not $7, and it is $6 at SVC. True, I do claim that it cannot cool 400 Mhz AMD XP overclocking in a satisfactory fashion. Not with 32 CFM fan it has under that $6 price. It seems to me that was obvious since none of you came with any documented proof of that, right? Are you able to do so? Btw, at the top of this page you have the proof of the opposite, a guy whose CPU is running 57C with this cooler after 17 Mhz FSB increase.

For there are countless of web sites where people evaluate coolers in some more verifiable fashion, and I see nobody to come up with that kind of outlandish claim anywhere.
I wonder what is the point of SVC rating it only to XP 1800. Do you want to claim that XP 1600 running at 1.8 Ghz is cooler than XP 1900 running default? Who's going to believe that without some evidence?
If you want no debate with me, don't address me, it is that simple. It looks retarded, excuse moi, to address somebody, ask questions, and expect the person not to respond.

There has already been a post about the GC68's ability and the link to its review. You can just scroll back to the 2nd page and follow the link. I've made some quotes for you to read there also. Obviously you've missed them looking at your reply.

I'll post the link here so you make a fool of yourself again, stevejst.

I didn't miss anything, it was just another bogus argument. If I was trying to argue with that before, you'd have complained about too many posts in the thread. But since you are asking ...

And you are calling me ignorant.

Let's assume the site has enough reputation to take it seriously.
They tested at XP 1700 speed and Duron 600 overclocked to 900. Hardly anything close to 1.8 GHz. YOUR $6 COOLER IS NEXT TO THE LAST THERE, better only than CAK II - 16, do you know what kind of cooler is that? A Duron cooler! What kind of argument are you trying to make???

You inform yourself first how much is a high speed Delta fan mounted for the IMPROVEMENT of that $6 cooler in that test. A hint - it costs significantly more than $6. Granted you pay no shipping for I see none at svc. They'd offer inferior YS-Tech, which is basically a 4-pin case fan, to you for additional $8, counting $14 for now.

For RobTV: the offer still stands, if you ask me nicely I just might tell you what kind of stepping TCWO sells.

Rob or Gary:

I have my parts in: agoia xp1600+, 8k3a, and Samsung 128 PC2100. Everything else is from my old 950 tbird setup- volcano II w/ asIII, Codegon300W psu, ATI radeon 32ddr, SBLive5.1 ... Exceptionally stable without overclocking- running at 38C system, 51C core.

When I go to overclock (fsb 166) my temp shows 57C in bios, but I can't get into winxp. I realize that my ram may be holding me back (no pc2700 on hand). My vcore is 1.76, vagp 1.56 and vdim 2.6V. Should I change any of these voltages?

I also realize that I may (will) need to add additional cooling- I've planned to add some case fans for a long time and volcano II is only rated to 1.5.

Thanks for any info.

edit: oh, I also keep my case open since I play around in there alot- would it be better to close the case for air flow redirection?

DaveF, you are at least one nice guy left around.

Two things you should change. First 300W Codegen is not good enough, I know that is claimed to be good up to XP 2000 but I also know that 3.3V line for that power supply is insufficient for overclocking. You need a better power supply. My suggestion would be 350W Sparkle or 350W Enhance, check on newegg. Enhance is cheaper but it makes a heck of a noise, I know, I have one. Or buy better if you have money to pay!
You also need to decrease that 57C because once you get in the windows on the full load you'd run more than 70C which is not something you want to do, believe me. Get a much faster fan for the cooler or get a better cooler. I am assuming you know how to use Artic Silver 3 as well.

Do not increase the voltages before you solve the cooling problem and get better power supply.
Once you get cooling 10C lower and better power supply, you can safely increase core voltage to 1.85V but don't go over that no matter what they are telling you because that is the top safe voltage for this CPU. You should not increase DRAM voltage (vdim) over 2.9V either.

Samsung is probably not the problem.

not trying to talk bad about the gc68 but I can't even get that thing on my board. first there was the horrible clips, then when I finally get it on, the heatsink wasn't even making full contact with the cpu. I can't explain it but the flat bottom was over the cpu and about a few mm of it was over the part where it says socket 462. so the cpu was not making full contact. so there's my rant, just glad it was only 6 bucks.

I got me a nice swifty for my 1600xp. too bad my board sucks and can't get it to post over 160 fsb. fic an11. maybe i'll try it again when my true430 gets here next week.

DaveF, I got my true430 antec for about 60 bucks after PM and AR from staples. pm me if you're interested in that deal. I think it's a good deal, cheapest on pricewatch is $68 before shipping.

cheapgoose - just a note about the GC68; the problem you mention is not specific to this heatsink. It's a design issue with some zero insertion force CPU sockets (Socket A in this case), in which the "ledge" you are talking about protrudes above the CPU's flip-chipped silicon die. If you check your GC68, you will see that there is a portion of the heatsink that is recessed for that specific reason.

I suppose you could blame SVC for not including an installation guide that points this out. However, you could always follow AMD's own CPU installation guide for their socket A processors. Your specific problem is on page 14, illustrated in Figure 14 under the words "THIS IS WRONG!". Unless the HS has a bottom surface that is no larger than the CPU itself (at least in the dimension with the ZIF socket handle) this will be something to be aware of with any socket A HS, not just the SVCs.

the clip on the SVC GC68 heatsink can be mounted in a couple wrong positions. This WILL cause high temps!!
I'm talking about where the clip rocks in the center of the heatsink, between the Heatsink fins, not on the socket.

If the clip is off by one notch, temps will be at least 10c higher than if mounted correctly.
Unlike most heatsinks, where the center swivel point is secure in one spot, this clip can easily be moved towards one side or the other.
This causes HS to not be correctly centered. Easy fix. Just make sure that clip extends the same on both sides of HS.
If not, move it one notch over until it does.
It is fully adjustable.
Do NOT simply attach to CPU socket. Check clip position first.
The two I received had both jumped a notch in shipping.
I assumed everyone checked this type of thing so I didn't mention it prior.
Looks like some may not have bothered to check that HSF was perfectly centered.

Just wanted to post my upgrade experience.
I bought the newegg $66 AMD 1600+ (AGOIA) and refurb Giga-byte GA-7VRXP at $67.
Best Buy PNY samsung pc2100 ram for $50 - $20 rebate.
SVC GC68 with adjustable fan and Artic Sivler 3.

Highest stable mhz: 1654mhz (11.5 x 143). Unlocked cpu. Temp was at 70C. Voltage was at 1.9
Note: Reading the Giga-byte forum says the motherboard displays the temp high. Many are reporting 52C just at idle. The same cpu in another motherboard runs ~10C lower.

Highest fsb: 154fsb. Most likely ram limited.

I removed the GC68 and took off the fan. I then placed the fan onto my old fully copper OCZ Goliath hs using a 60 to 80 mm adapter and mounted on the cpu.

Result at 1654mhz was 59C.

I guess the GC68 can't hold too well when o/c really high.

Case was used was Antec 830sx with 3 80mm fans in and 2 80 mm out. Power supply was Fortron 350w.

Hampton, I doubt your problem is memory related. That Samsung runs easily PC2700, in fact most of PC2100 will easily do over 300Mhz unless junk, and your stick is the first grade. I have one of that and I have no problem running over 150Mhz with it.
FSP power supply you have suppose to be a good one, I don't have it though. I think your problem is the motherboard. You'll have to be very specific and the answer here is Epox EP-8K3A or EP-8K3A +, that is where the most of these overclocking reports are. Some do get it from Abit but that is a minority.

Just for a fun, I entered a totally bogus data in that overclocking database mentioned here many times, and they took it!
Very reliable.

what are the instructions to overclock(website?...forum?..) if indeed I want to try it...

other junks include

32x cd-rw/cd rom

also I'm looking for a cheap decent working graphic card and sound card.....any suggestions?
I'm trying to stay within $400 budget w/o monitor........

Codegen 6054L is not well ventilated case, you'll need a lot of fans for that. Codegen 350W power supply, just like it's younger brother has insufficient 3.3V line for serious overclocking. If I am not mistaken that PSU has 190W combined output which is not a PSU made for overclocking. It is possible but not probable. More, heatsinks in that power supply are insufficient as well and with only one fan that will overheat easily.
I am not saying it is a bad PSU, it is just not made for 400Mhz overclocked Palomino.

For one thing, don't try to save money on cooler, you might save $10 and get a useless one and then you'd have to buy again anyway. You can still get a decent cooler for less than $20, I see TI-V77L at SVC is just $16, I am sure it is better than GC68. If you want GC68 at least get the best fan SVC sells with that.
The more expensive and good are the top quality Coolermasters heat pipes HHCs, and HCCs, Arkua, Alphas with proper fan, Swiftechs but they all costs significantly more, check newegg. Apparently AX-7 from Thermalright is popular too.

Some coolers might not fit your motherboard, you need to check the dimensions and recommendations.

Absolute temperature is not telling enough for the ambient temperature could be very different. For comparison I run $7 Coolermaster on XP 1700 overclocked to 140 FSB and CPU temperature is 39C. But my system temperature is 25C, so that is the trick. I can go to 148 FSB stable Windows XP but I get temperature to about 45-46C and for some reason I don't like that.
Every degree more increases a chance of CPU failure which in turn decreases the mean lifetime, that is a statistical fact.
What is the max post FSB, I don't know for I have no intention of risking to fry my CPU to find that out. Having a hard drive returning errors on an overclocked bus is no fun for me either.
I am talking working and watching movies in Windows, not a boot temperature or a full load or idle, just a regular Windows XP operating environment.

Abit KR7-133 Raid $50
AGOIA 1600 $67
2/256 Samsung 2100 Fast timings $30 each
GC68 <--Yeppers... It's a keeper! $6
GF3/64 $67 too.
2/120gig 7200 $140 each

Runs at 162 FSB / 54C all day full load. 166 boots XP but gets errors after a few minutes in Prime 95.

As for the overclocked $66 cpu dying prematurely... Who cares? It'll be worthless in a year any way so run the heck out of it while you can. The life of a cpu is 6-10 years so shortening it by 20 or even 50% get's you way past it's usability anyway so you're losing value by not overclocking it. Of course if you're clueless on how to do it properly then you'll waste a whole $66 and will probably have to sell your house to cover the loss.

stevejst,

You were right. The memory wasn't what is holding me back. Because the memory module specifies it was a 100mhz module (ta0), i was afraid to push it. By lowering the cpu multiplier and setting bios treat the ram as ddr333, I was able to get it to run docmemory test it at 165fsb + 33mhz ~ 396 Mhz. Not sure why I didn't try 166fsb to see if the 1/5 divider kicks in.

Thanks,

HamtonP

Picked up the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP motherboard refurb from Newegg, works fine but shipped with no CD. Is there anything useful on the disc that isn't available for download on Gigabyte's web site?
