So admit it...who here was one of those who moved the controller every time you pressed the jump button even knowing it has no effect on the character on screen?

It's kind of bizarre - I've played games like this against my kids when they were younger, and I crushed them. I played Atari Tanks (Combat) against them, and they had their butts handed to them. But, if I played more modern games against them, where special moves required some memorized sequence of 5 or 6 button and joystick inputs - I didn't have a prayer.

Heh I don't have kids but I regularly play games with/against my friend and his 10 year old son. His son gets totally destroyed in every game we play. Mostly because he doesn't have the patience to learn the nuances of the game and the intricacies of getting to a competitive level. Everything from NBA 2k15, to Ultra Street Fighter 4, to Mario, to Mortal Kombat X, to Halo, to CoD, and Forza Motorsports. I think he just hasn't gotten out of instant gratification phase and when he starts losing he panics and goes into button mash mode or stops trying. I keep trying to give him some tips about concentrating on the game etc. Maybe in a couple years he will start to appreciate the games on a deeper level and learn them a bit more. I don't think he's into them enough to spend time getting good at them yet.

< this guy

Heh I remember seeing a couple of my friends and my sister do it and I used to yell at them. I can see it now "are you dumb? you know moving the controler doesn't do anything, stop it."

i used to move my hands playing mario kart and stuff, and starfox, with the controller in hand.

when i play fighting games i am pretty intense too. i can't just sit back with a joystick on my lap. i have to have it sitting on something and am usually leaning forward a bit by the end of the match. i tend to move my shoulders quite a bit when playing fighters too.

hell i've had sessions of killer instinct, and keep in mind it's in my cold ass basement, where i've literally been sweating afterwards lol.

I can see that, remember lots of guys jumping a bit in the arcades back in the day. I can't say I do that or have ever done that with games, but I've been known to get into rage mode and I've had to replace a couple controllers over the years. I'm not like that anymore.

It's all part of getting yourself into the rhythm of the game. Putting your body into it. I dunno, maybe it helps reinforce muscle memory or something.

What's worse is how when I was watching someone play I'd shadow their movements on the other controller.

my six year old triplets love super mario. They can get to the second part after about a month of playing now. Not bad for six :

I have made a gaming room for them. There is 2600, NES, Supernes, Sega and ps1 ps2 and ps3 and xbox 360 as well as 4 pcs and a multiplexer so I can send video from the other room. They had a party for friends and their parents were jealous.

They started playing on the atari and a virtual pong and have graduated to each system after getting rewarded for doing something good. They just got to use the ps1 for the first time after we spent the day at a food kitchen yesterday. They played Crash Bandicoot till bedtime

I did that. Did anyone else hold the controller over the top where you were using your index and middle fingers to control the d-pad, and same on button push on this game? It's the only game I ever did that on, but gave much more control. You couldn't really do it in any of the later games because of the crouching and looking up options that they introduced.

Also....I have a soft spot for SMB2 (not the lost levels). It is different and weird enough that I've played through it a number of times out of nostalgia and I still find it entertaining. I don't remember what I thought of it at the time, but it's grown on me over the years as something original in the series. (and yes, I know the background on it). I kind of wish they'd revisit that world at some point.

I remember wishing that SMB3 was like 2 where you could pick up stuff and play as more than just Mario in single player.

I'm playing it on emulator (Higan)

I think one of the things throwing me off is the scrolling sometimes gets choppy, despite showing a constant 60fps. It can make it hard to land jumps sometimes.

Awkwardly raises hand.

I used to jump around when I was a kid. Just practicing for the release of the Wii 15 years later.

I'm usually pretty bad at Mario games. Only one I've ever beaten was the first Wario Land on Gameboy.

Playing the old ones via Super Mario All-Star. Really puts into perspective what a leap forward Super Mario World was, which was my first Mario game I played as a kid. Super Mario World really took it to a new level.

My mom used to do the controller lift-jump thing when she would occasionally play Mario with me and my Dad. We'd make fun of her

This reminds me of watching my father play "Pinball" for the NES. Dad was a regular pinball player in his youth and he would shake the controller as if he was shaking the machine! lol

Yep bumping the table is common practice for pinballers and a tough habit to break.

SMB3 was the leap. SMW was SMB3 with a little better graphics.

i think my favorite part about SMW was when you landed on a stage that had a red dot, and you knew there was at least 1 secret exit to the level.

100%'ing that game was such a blast.

The rainbow road or whatever it was called in SMW was nuts to me.

You mean the Special World? It is the best part of the game. Some of my proudest video game moments were barely getting through Tubular, or nailing that last jump on a turtle in Awesome.

Didn't it have a crazy name though? It had the craziest levels ever in a Mario game. Dunno how I ever finished them.

Each level was TMNT type phrases. Awesome. Tubular. Gnarly. Groovy. Mondo. Etc.

And some were the hardest Mario levels ever until Galaxy came along.

I still remember sitting by my mother on the carpet at 5 years old the night she brought home a NES, the both of us just moving Right into the Goomba and dying over and over. Then I got the hint you need to hit the A button to jump. It was my first time playing a video game.

Nice... I remember drooling over getting a NES for a couple years. 3 of my friends had it. I REALLY wanted it for Legend of Zelda. I remember spending hours over at my different friend's houses just watching that game, let alone playing it, and loving every moment. I got my NES I believe Christmas '86, unfortunately by then Legend of Zelda was out of print (due to Nintendo of America's rules limiting games to certain number of batches), and no store anywhere near us had a copy. I eventually was able to get Zelda (but well after Zelda 2 was released which I was able to get). My parents did give me an IOU for the original Legend of Zelda, since as stated, no one had it...

I remember the 2nd game I was able to pick out (for my birthday a few months later) was Contra. I don't think I could have selected a better game that has withstood the test of time. Now that I think about it, of all the games I bought or asked for as a kid, almost all of them went on to become classics and have withstood the test of time (Zelda, Contra, SMB 1-3, Castlevania 1 and 3 (never got 2 back then, but I have it now), Megaman 2, Final Fantasy...)

Super Mario Maker will be mad good.

I grew up on Atari 2600, NES, etc. My best video game memory was receiving SNES with Super Mario World for Christmas. I don't think any gaming experience can top that until Nintendo releases another console with Zelda and Mario at launch. If Nintendo wants back in the game, do not release NX until Zelda is ready for launch with it. Sell like hotcakes, nobody can resist.
