Okay I know super & personal don't go well together when you use them to describe a pc, but heck let's just ask.

You know, pc's range from slow ones(respectively) used for only -say- word processing to high end ones running the most demanding games at max settings/running high-demanding applications like if they were nothing.

My question is: can there be a machine which can be called a super personal computer? Can I build a rig which I can brag about publicly? Something abnormal, but still can be utilized at home? Something that once built, can be considered an achievement?

Perhaps, it is easier to do such a thing in third world countries since not a lot of computer enthusiastics exist there.

Why?..........nothing important, I might just start a project and call it just like the thread title! It might get me some attention. he he !

Very quick thoughts: Maybe a dual i7 980x's or xeons in a dual socket mobo with 4 top of the line gpus and two decent ssd's in raid0 for the OS ( xxTB for storage) with high speed 24 gb ram and a huge monitor? No that won't suffice !

I don't know............! Please help!

NOW, be gentle ! Don't flame me. Sarcasm is not allowed ^_^

you can brag about it, but you won't be recognized anywhere for it. In short, no... you won't be able to do something like this using consumer hardware without immense amounts of money, or connections.

You can brag about any thing that you want (No need even to have a computer).

If some one wants to see it you can explain that such a super computer is in a clean room and you can let people in and contaminate the room.

1. Yes, it can be labeled anything you prefer.
2. Yes, you can, but the public isn't required to actually be impressed.
3. Yes, even the oddest build can still have some utility.
4. Yes, anything can be considered "an achievement". But again, the public isn't required to be impressed.
5. Sure, but it's not really a proper question.

Hardware's hardware, no one really cares; or at least I don't :^D I think the way to make your machine stand out, and give you something to brag about is to make an interesting case for it. There's a lot of cool ideas you can use if you divorce yourself from the standard box paradigm. I'd look in that direction. As far as a different name goes... I wouldn't. That comes across as silly to me.

My i7 is much faster than that old E6600 you have

See OP, you dont need a super personal pc to brag, just find someone with something worse than you and hey presto!

Aha.. so that is the reason to why you can write the 500 pages novel about the condition of mankind while multitasking and developing a new cure for Cancer of the brain.

Wow! :\

P.S. I pioneered years ago a renowned software for Cognitive Rehabilitation of Post Traumatic Head Injuries with Radio Shack Color Computer.

You can make a cpu farm out of a few hundred PC's and call it a super computer.... but I bet IBM or some research lab like Sandia has one way more powerful.

Bragging rights are basically useless when it comes to PCs. I built a Q6600 rig and overclocked it to 3.6, just because that's what all the cool kids were doing at the time, and what did it get me? No, not babes. Just a big electric bill.

Now I'm heading in the other direction, towards whatever low-power PC I can get away with and still use easily.

Anything out of the "sweet spot" and people are gonna hit you with price/performance / scaling / noise / power angles.

An i3 530/i5 750/i7 860 with a launch-price 5850 and a good SSD is pretty brag-worthy.
