I am about to buy a new laptop and the "best" I have found so far is this one - Clevo P750ZM. It has the following spec'd out:

i7 4790K (yes, a desktop CPU in a laptop)
32GB 2133mhz RAM
512GB Samsung XP941 M.2 x4 drive
1TB 7200 rpm
nVidia 980m
15.6" 4k QFHD Samsung display

My question is this - do you know of any laptops that are available with better hardware available than this?

What are you going to use it for?

If it's a 20 lb. "laptop" with desktop parts but a mobile graphics chip, you might be better off with a mini-ITX system with desktop graphics card and some carrying bags for your desktop, monitor, keyboard, mouse.

Also, if money is no object, why a 1 TB platter drive instead of a second SSD? You can get 1 TB SSDs now.

7.5 lbs in a 15.6" frame. I will be using it for school/gaming/video watching use while overseas at graduate school.

I didn't like the price of the hard drive upgrades - I got a SSD for OS/APPS (the super fast xp941 by Samsung) and the regular platter drive for data. I can add another HD to it at any time I desire.

Specs are available here.

Depends what you are using it for, doesn't sound like you need so much power for what you have listed. FWIW for higher spec you would probably want to buy a laptop that allows configuration. For instance you might want to consider the 6C/12T i7-4960X or if your requirements are for more core processing power then maybe one of the XEON's such as 12C/24T E5-2697 v2. Graphics choice might be dual GTX980m in SLI for gaming unless you are looking at other reasons to use a top Quadro card instead.

That's not a laptop, that's garbage in a laptop shape. Get a real laptop or a desktop, if you buy that thing you're not gonna be happy with your purchase.

He is completely right.

Basically, Clevo/Sager laptops are built like a straw cabin. You huff and puff with intense use and thing falls apart. It has happened over and over again for the last 8 years, and it never changes. That cpu will overheat like crazy even with a mat. That gpu will also create intense heat reaching temps of 110-120. After a year or two, the mobo will go out and next in like is that gpu. It is a total waste to buy it. Just go with a brand like MSI. A better quality that is built to last.

Just to chime in: that CPU won't actually gain you anything in gaming - the mobile quad core i7s are perfectly fine for that. Save yourself some money, heat issues and back pain and find something with a laptop grade CPU.

Here's a quote from one of those super powerful laptop users.

Mr. Fox said:
News flash! None of these machine have exhibited any evidence of damage or malfunction from having the guts overclocked out of the CPU and GPUs.

As for the weight while I don't own one of these monsters as I have to compromise performance vs cost I personally wouldn't even notice carrying around 5kgs of laptop weight. I do appreciate some users can find carrying just 1.5kgs a strain however I again personally can not justify paying hundreds of dollars more for a light weight that performs with less than half the performance. Different horses for different courses.

High performance requires high power and decent cooling which means extra weight, not thin and light. If all I wanted is some light usage and long battery life for things such as browsing, email and so on my mobile phone does an acceptable job with that.

My only worry would be how loud a 15" laptop would be with all that hardware in it. I have a MSI GT72 Dominator, which shares the same GPU, but has a mobile CPU. It uses two separate fans/heatsinks, and you can still hear it at idle. A 15" laptop will most likely have far less room for cooling components... especially when you consider that it also needs a 1055 socket rather than just a BGA-applied CPU.

So 70db for max sound. And 100c for cpu temps.

Sound seems bearable for gaming. Not sure that temp will damage the performance over time
