I use a wifi connection at my house from a router and it has been REALLY slow lately. Playing games online is about unbearable. And just to load this site for example took 20 seconds... I have a theory, my brother just got his laptop today, is he sucking my internet? like can i only go half the speed and he has the other half? I hate it, its frustrating and I want my old speed back. Sorry this is more of a rant, and I am not even sure if this is correct but that is the way it looks...

Does the same thing happen if you connect the laptop directly to the router with an ethernet cable (i.e. not using wireless)?

OK - the Wi-Fi is only a local distribution of the Internet connection being used to support it. Is it cable or DSL? That can make a difference on periodic speed changes.

If it is cable, it is shared bandwidth with all other subscribers in the served area. That can result in a wide area slowdown when a lot of users are on at the same time.

Is it only slow when he is on it as well?
Is his wireless a slower speed than yours (ie-b vs g vs n)? I think routers go the speed of the slowest connection.

It is your brother's fault. No matter what, unless you have comcast, then it is alright to blame them.

Have you tried resetting the router yet?

If not, unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in.

I am using DSL and I have never connected it to the router before... my dad set it up a long time ago and we just use it wirelessly.

Having more than one PC on it at a time means it has to be a router as well as a modem. So does connecting to it wirelessly.

If you do not want to follow advice, why ask for it?

Though highly unlikely, you could try upgrading the firmware and see if that works. What you're really going to have to do is plug it in the router and see if it is still slow.

Good on DSL - that eliminates bandwidth sharing in the local area.

Have you tried connecting to the router via hard wire? That would help the diagnosis. Many older routers run half the speed in wireless that they do wired. Mine is that way - wired is 100 Mbps. Wireless is 54 Mbps.
