Wouldn't the third player just be on the tablet?

That's true. So, if we wanted to have a 4th player, could he or she use the wiimote by itself?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it on the game's site that the regular wiimote can be used by itself.

It absolutely can, but keep in mind it's just about the least optimal controller for SSB. This game is really meant for gamepads, with Wiimote + Nunchuck at least somewhat somewhat better than the stand-alone Wiimote.

I definitely understand it's least optimal but we'll already be spending quite a bit just getting the Wii U itself that getting MK8 and possibly SSB would mean that funding more controllers would be only the remotest of possibilities.

Has anyone else purchased any Amiibos for the Wii U? They are slowly making ones to go with Smash characters for now. I have:

Samus
Villager
Little Mac
Pit
Captain Falcon
Diddy Kong

Pre-Orders:
Toon Link
Shiek
Lucario
Ike
Mega Man x2 (plan on canceling my BB pre-orders)

I've yet to figure out the point of them. Can anyone give some kind of defense as to how their use is beneficial?

Some will work with other games. Captain Falcon is supposed to provide an extra kart skin in MK8. There are other games planned, but I do not know off the top of my head.

There are only three rare ones if you plan on purchasing the US versions and keeping them in their packaging. If you plan on opening them, there are no rare ones. The US will supposedly not see any more Villager, Marth or Wii Fit Trainer Amiibos. You can order them from amazon.de or amazon.fr take them out of the box and they are the exact same item.

New content's out today.

Characters:

Ryu (Street Fighter II): $7, comes with Suzaka Castle level
Roy (Fire Emblem): $4
Lucas (Mother 3): $4

Stages:

Suzaka Castle: $7 (comes with Ryu; no mention of purchasing it separately from the character)
Dreamland: $2 (based on Dreamland from SSB on N64)
Miiverse Stage: Free (Miiverse posts appear throughout the stage)

Mii Fighter Costumes ($0.75 each; $6 for all):

Akira (Virtua Fighter)
Jacky (Virtua Fighter)
Heihachi (Tekken)
Isabelle (Animal Crossing)
MegaMan.EXE (Mega Man Battle Network)
ZERO (Mega Man X)
Inkling Girl (Splatoon)
Inkling Boy (Splatoon)
Squid Hat (Splatoon)

They're also adding two Tourney modes, though I missed that part of the stream to see exactly how they work. YouTube replays are coming as well. Nintendo also said that EVERY SSB character will eventually get an amiibo. If the Internet's count is right, there are 51 characters. Given that they're usually $12 per-amiibo, that's $612 (before tax) in sneaky DLC from Nintendo. Throw in the non-Smash amiibos, like the Super Mario ones, the gold Mario, the Woolly World trio, the Splatoon trio, and likely more others, and they're going to be pushing $1,000 by the end of all of this.

Your complaint makes no sense. From the looks of it you enjoy DLC and most likely collecting cool figurines.

I know I do. So, why complain because Nintendo is making something you want ?

btw, it's not necessary to buy anything you don't want to buy. Don't blame Nintendo.

I complain for two reasons:

1. Damn, those things are expensive in a group.
2. Give what you get out of Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures, amiibos are comparatively boring, IMO. I get they work across multiple games, but every game but Smash (like MK8 and the upcoming Yoshi's Woolly World) is just a character skin. I'd like to see them get sandboxy, like Infinity, where amiibos can be interactive in something. They could have made them playable in MP10 (though given how poorly that game allegedly turned out, it wouldn't have been worth the effort). They could be Mario Kart 8 characters. They could be in Splatoon, or even Mario Maker (they'd actually make a LOT of sense in that game, IMO). I just think that they have unlimited potential, and it feels like they're wasting it.

But it wasn't even really a complaint, just an observation of how expensive that's going to be for true collectors (thanks to the secondhand market and hoarders, to an extent). I'd love to see amiibos work interactively across multiple games, but that seems unlikely to ever occur, partially because of the save limitations they have.
