I'll be on once in a while once my basement is finished being repaired after our sump pump failed.
Haven't played for over a month now.
Haven't played for over a month now.
what do you mean 'practice offline' ?
are you just playing AI and training? or are you playing local people offline?
Training mode. Getting combos down, timing on throws, etc.
As soon as I go online it doesn't matter. I can juggle someone from one end of the screen to the other with DP -> FADC -> DP .... but I can't perform a simple DP - FADC - Ultra online.
Another example is the game against a Hakkan player I just had. I'd see him making the move to slide at me, I'd press down and back to block, but either I'm too slow or the online connection is too slow and I still get hit.
Going to have to give this game up. No matter how much I practice offline I still soundly get my ass kicked online over and over. Fuck it.
Online play is such shenanigans, I don't really put much thought into it. Getting an early poke or combo and holding down back is an official online strategy... Should say enough about how silly it is. For practice, I play friends offline mostly. Just look around on some forums for a local community.
well yea training mode isn't that helpful honestly. it won't teach you anything really other than experimenting with what links and timing of some stuff.
but it doesn't teach you much at all about facing another opponent. i'd say that fighters in general are like 25% execution maybe. the other 75% is a lot of mind games and other factors at play, such as spacing, meter control, level control, etc.
the only way to get better is to want to get better and study why you lose and figure out what to do next time in that situation. watch videos of good players and see what they do to get better.
i know it's hard (because this is probably my biggest issue with this game) but when you are getting beat you can't get frustrated and have to keep your mental strength up. i get frustrated easily and start making up excuses as well, such as blaming lag or something of the such. but deep down i know i just f'ed up and got outplayed, or my execution was just off. and when i get frustrated it spirals downwards pretty quick.
yea it is hard to find actual good matches online with a good connection. when i find someone who is legitimately a solid player who is looking to get better and have some great matches i send a friend request after a session with them.
i get booted often because i beat people who for some reason don't want to try and learn how to beat me but instead would rather kick me than learn. seems to be happening more frequently now, although I haven't played as much recently. going to try and get back into it though a tad before mvc3 comes out.
Ask my wife how often I watch videos of good players. lol She gets really annoyed when I fire another one up. I also watch my matches online to see what went wrong.
Honestly, the problem is probably with me. I tense up too much when playing online whereas I feel much more at ease in training or against the CPU. Not much I can do about that unfortunately.
There are so many people online that find one move or trick that is difficult to counter and spam it repeatedly. As a Ryu player, if any of my special moves whiff I am easily punishable. It seems so many other characters have several moves that, even when blocked or missed, still leaves them far enough away or have a quick enough recovery that there's little I can do to make them pay. So I'm left waiting for them to make a major fuck up before I can get in some serious damage. If I pressure them after a knock down I almost always have to simply block as so many people throw out wake up specials and ultras. If I try to get cute and use cross ups, throws, cr. MK pokes, etc. I just get pimp slapped.
Even though I try to play the "right way," so to speak, it's less effective against your average online opponent. Couple that with being more tense and throwing combos or accidentally whiffing a buffered move and you have a recipe for disaster.
well if they are spamming one move repeatedly, then that becomes extremely predictable ... bait it out, then punish hard.
as far as ryu ... i dont know what to say dude. he is the most well rounded character in the game. he doesn't have that many unsafe moves at all. the times you are doing them just aren't the right time probably. his fireball recovery is faster than ken and about the same as sagat. his ex tatsu is fairly safe. his srk can be fadc so as long as you have 2 bars there is absolutely no risk.
which moves of ryu's are you getting punished so hard with? also, depending who you are playing, ryu is either best at zoning or rushing down. personally i like to rush down pretty much everyone I play no matter who I'm playing as (i main balrog but have been playing a lot of ryu recently), unless it is someone like thawk or gief.
Decided a character change was in order. Have been having some decent success with Cody online now.
Cool man. the one tough thing about cody is that he is basically free on wakeup and once you knock him down it is pretty easy to continue to put pressure on him. he probably has the best frametraps in the game though.
Are you on SRK even?
Why would this be relevant? This is why I don't like that community.
I've started to play a lot again after picking up MvC3 (ironic isn't it). Hit me up under Redsh1ft. I play viper now so I'm pretty ass at the game. Also since I live in the midwest now, I can play people from both coasts
