Yesterday, I downloaded and installed the new version of RealPlayer, ver. 16.0.1.18 on two different machines, and immediately swept both for viruses and spyware. Superantispyware found a trojan on both, which I deleted. Sorry, I didn't copy the name of the file before deleting it.

Just a heads up and wondering if anyone else encountered this?

Edited per later posts in this thread to reflect that Superantispyware acted quickly to update their definitions to correct the false positive.

False positive? But seriously, why RealPlayer?

Because, to my ears, it has the best sounding codec compared with Quicktime or Window Media Player, and it's easy to set it to stop the nag factors.

Probably a False Positive.

I suggest you uninstall your current version of RealPlayer then run your system for a complete virus scan. Then download and re-install RealPlayer again

Then update SUPERAntiSpyware and scan again

Alternative suggestion,

I personally use MPC-HC always for everything, and along with the LAV Filters + madVR Renderer it gives me the highest quality amongst any other player.

Then you can simple install the RealAlternative Codec (do not forget to uncheck "install MPC-HC" checkbox since we already have MPC-HC by this stage while installing it.

Good luck

Thanks. I always keep my ant-malware programs up to date so I was using the current version of Superantispyware and latest definitions when I scanned, and it found the file. After it removed the file, I ran a boot time AV scan and came up clean.

I installed the latest version as an update directly from Real so, if it's infected, it's on their site. Your link goes to a boot loader (download assist prog), not the full installation file. I always prefer to keep the full installation file, instead.

As I noted in my OP, this is just a heads up because it could be a false alarm.

There was a false positive report on the SuperAntiSpyware website concerning Realplayer. It is apparently detecting the RealCleaner component of RealPlayer as Trojan.Agent/Gen-FraudScan[Prod] .

SuperAntiSpyware support says it is supposed to be fixed in SuperAntiSpyware core 10132 or greater.

So, as long as you are getting your copy straight from Real, you should have no worries for now.

Of course that begs the question, why does RealCleaner mimic the signature of a trojan? I'd at least look into that, and try to determine what it does.

Also reported as a false positive on Malwarebytes forum. See post by shadowwar, posted 13 March, 2013 - 07:34 PM and following.

Thanks to all who chased down the answer. Don't shoot the messenger (me). I posted the Superantispyware report when I saw it because the Real Player update was new, and I wanted to let folks know ASAP if it was legit.

Credit to Superantispyware for addressing it so quickly.
