I want to like this show, but you can see SO DAMNED MANY "men in suits" decisions in the cast.

"We need a strong black male character. Let's make Jimmy Olsen a hip, hot black guy."
"We can make a nerdy white computer guy to appeal to the hipster population"
"We need to give her a purpose right away, so let's introduce an "alien of the week" format"

Also, I was so concious of them saying "Him" instead of Superman that it got annoying as hell. I bet 50% of the dialog contained the word "him".

The Flash started out hokey too and it turned out OK. Hope this does the same. Otherwise we'll get CSI Oklahoma or something to take its place.

This is really pretty dumb. Bringing in Jimmy Olsen was a bad move in the first place, they clearly just wanted people to go on name recognition here. Making him black doesn't make a difference but it looks like they also completely changed his personality, stature, experience level, etc. The cynic in me says that they made him black just in the hopes that it'd make people less willing to criticize all the other changes they made out of fear of looking like it's just a cover for racism.

looks like most of the show is actually a very typical crush/love/identity-crisis/coming-of-age type writing. It could be any teen show really, its just that for 5 minutes per episode super girl will save somebody.

It may be a hit, we'll see. I still don't see how it entertains when at the core it is a very obvious rebranding of yet another teen drama. I think people must be bored to watch stuff like this.

Well it was mildly entertaining. I give the CG a B+. Somehow I think they put this on the wrong network.

It may just be me but I have little interest in this show for a simple reason: I've never found the character (or Superman) compelling. Superman has traditionally been portrayed as flying, stronger than pretty much everything, FOIAP invincible, laser vision, cold breath, super fast, x-ray vision, super hearing and morally incorruptible. "Normal" villains are no match so they come up with equally ridiculously powered supervillains (Darkseid) and they fight to a standstill. It's hard to be a compelling hero when you're quasi-omnipotent. We as the consumer know that either you're in no danger or at worst the big bad is an equal. Supergirl is that, except Kara is slightly more powerful than Clark because "she metabolizes sunlight" better.

The reason heroes like Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, etc. are compelling is because they're flawed.

I don't see with the opening plot how they can build anything really. It's almost like they expect a short run, and so are dumping their largest story ideas on the show immediately.

Well someone has to say it first. Superhero and super-villain women in comics have long been the subject of male sexism. That is large breasts. So imagine my surprise when Supergirl is running in an alley and rips off her shirt, revealing the famed iconic Krypton family crest, and lo and behold she sports an A cup size. Maybe Hollywood is breaking new ground here. Maybe that is good as a self esteem tool for teenage girls. Still it caught me off guard. And being a conditioned male, I was craving for more. It's not my fault, you understand. I am a victim of a failing society.

CBS is claiming big ratings for the premiere showing. But they blew it on The Late Night Show With Stephen Colbert. Melissa Benoist, Supergirl's lead star, appeared on the show around midnight. Colbert's show is prerecorded earlier in the day. So while they talked about the upcoming new show's premiere, it was already hours after the fact, when viewers saw the interview. CBS would have been more timely to have her on last Friday's Late Night Show. Then again it is CBS.

Yeah I wouldn't be so confident.

Nielson ratings of the premier were high but it greatly benefited from following The Big Bang Theory and probably a fair number of people either willing to blindly give it a chance or who were straight up watching it to make fun of it or have a more informed reason to dislike it. None of these things are factors that guarantee anything long term.

The review score on IMDB is really low for a superhero TV show. The Flash, Arrow, Agent Carter, Daredevil, and Gotham all have 8+ scores. Even Agents of SHIELD has a 7.2. Supergirl, on the other hand, currently sits at 6.2. Which is actually pretty low for a TV show in general.

Speaking of Agents of SHIELD and Gotham, they both had really impressive initial ratings, even better than Supergirl's, but they fell much lower.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles also did amazing the first week. Cancelled by season 2.

I don't read romance novels, so I am unqualified to answer your question about male stars.

Regarding cup size, I was just pointing out a possible positive of Supergirl having small breasts. Maybe you think that teen girls should aspire to having DD silicon breasts. Or maybe you haven't ever noticed how super hero and villan women are portrayed in comic books, movies and TV. Don't blame me that they don't look like Rose O'Donnell or Elen. Write to Disney or Marvel or whomever.

I didnt think the second episode was as bad as the pilot. Kinda smart in some ways...a superhero who doesnt know how to put out fires or consider structure would make those mistakes. She shouldnt have been able to compete with her aunt though, with only that YMCA style self defense lesson her sister gave her.

That fight scene with her aunt was pretty bad effects wise, they should have just left the rigging in, it wouldn't have made any difference.
