I've heard rumor that prices for 5.45x39 are going to go up pretty soon... apparently the cheap surplus stuff is getting harder to find. If you want to shoot cheap ammo, .22LR is the way to go, period.

Anyways, back on topic: I've heard that you can find complete DPMS AR-15s these days for ~$650, so that's another option for folks to look into. Definitely agree that AR-15 prices are finally starting to go back to normal (when will ammo, dammit?).

I was in Budsgunshop and they had the DPMS for $750... kinda a cheapo one but good price that is the lowest I have seen anywhere. Love to find a $399 AK seems $499 is about the best i can find. If anyone sees a AR for $650 LMK good price OP good find.

gunbroker.com is your friend, apparently. DPMS makes good gear, from what I'm told.

The problem with cheap AKs is that most of them were imported by Century, and the parts that Century put into them to make them compliant with import regulations were generally sub-standard.

That said, Classic Arms is selling a Saiga AK for $350:
http://www.classicarms.us/

No pistol grip, but that's pretty damned cheap. Toss on a Tapco Saiga stock, and, bam, high quality AK-47-alike for ~$450. I'm not so interested - 7.62x39 is about the same price as .223 these days - but it's a good option for folks looking for an AK, for whatever reason.

Anyone with a AR-15 in New York state? I've been trying to find what the laws really are.

I've heard it is limited to a 10 round magazine. And no collapsible stock since you only get one "evil" feature and that would be the pistol grip.

So given that I'm not sure I want to spend $1500 on something so neutered. But I'm hoping an owner from NY can tell me otherwise.

1500? I am building mine for 650 without optics. A solid stock isn't bad and no barrel break would just make it loud but 10 round mags would sux.

pick your flavor, upgrade to a chrome lined brl for the additional $45, then get a superior arms lower from aim for ~$100 shipped and then usually a local ffl transfer fee of ~$30 or so and you are done

only problem is the backlog that del-ton and many others in the community are currently going through....long wait for the better priced stuff. have seen many colt 6920s for back to pre-election prices of ~$1200-$1250 or so.

I'm not sure it's really fair to call it a $650 build if it doesn't have optics or sights of any sort... those are kinda necessary, despite what the gangstas of the world may try to tell you.

The assembly is also... tricky. The lower is a complex bit of mechanical engineering. I can barely put my Ruger 10/22 trigger assembly back together.

I put together my ar15 lower in about an hour the first time I tried. I then took it down and rebuilt it and it only took like 15 minutes.

Used a guide at:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782

There are also some videos on YouTube that make things much easier to understand.

$650 is fair with those links above if you don't mind fixed sights. I'm going to end up building a flattop with an 18" stainless steel barrel and some nice handguards, I'll end up at around $1000 once I add a quality BCG and such, I was just curious as to how he was building one so cheaply. Would be a nice deal for a casual plinking rifle

Hmm, those del-ton kits are interesting. If someone just wants to assemble a basic plinker for sport shooting what would be the best setup? I ordered one of the superior lowers even though the quality on them is not supposed to be the best. Could I get one of these kits, add it on, and then later get a complete .22LR upper as well for even cheaper plinking?

putting a lower together will take you an hour max, and that is taking it really slow - they are pretty easy and all you need are a couple small punches, a small hammer and some jaw taped vice grips - here is a tutorial - http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782

for sigths - the front one is already there, just pick up a magpul mbus rear or another rear for $50-$75 and you are g2g so call it a $725 build , and you are getting good parts.

yes along w/ many other calibers - at most you would just swap out the upper and mags and you can go 22lr, 5.56, 5.7x28, 6.8spc, 6.5 and others (probably 30+ caliber conversions for the ar family) very easily. w/ a bit more fiddling you can go pistol caliber uppers too. or you can get the 22lr conversion kit that goes in the regular upper for ~$150-$200 - basically just swapping out the bolt/carrier and you are g2g.

i really wouldn't call a superior arms lower a "lower quality item", just like computer parts, say ati/amd gpus, there are just a couple of real manfs making them and then the dealers get a different rollmark on the side. so you have ~6 or so manfs making lowers for all the manfs and they are using forgings from just a couple of sources. a lot of people will pay much more for a rollmark even though the exact same lower can sometimes be found for much cheaper just because of the rollmark, imho i don't really care what is on the side of my lower as long as it all goes together and works. and fwiw, they are all going w/ the basically the same set of plans so it is not like they are using different standards.

take noveske for instance - excellent rep and very high priced, but they are basically parts guns and their ace is there barrels that i believe are FN barrels - that is the secret. i don't believe noveske actually does much actual machining.

i would say there is going to be more difference in the actual finish/color than anywhere else for the majority of lowers built today - w/ the exception of the billet produced ones, but just so you know, all of them, either ones that come from a billet or those that come from a forging all get cnc machined to final specs.

i found this one in about 5sec, there are others to be had - go to ar15.com and go to the ar15 section, then AR Discussion and search for 6920, colt or whatever you want, you will find a "hot deal" there

Good luck with nothing stupid coming from DC.
It's been a long time since I have seen Colts in that price range. Hard to believe that once upon a time they could be had for around $600. The 6940 is a nice weapon. Go for it!

i hear you. i do think if the 6940 goes to 1300 it will be a no brainer ....just waiting and watching and hoping ammo gets back to a little more reality....

Guys, this forum is NOT the place for your political statements. I've let them go so far, because they have not dominated the thread. But this is it.

Next comment about anything political in this thread gets a week vacation.

I shot a 6940 over memorial. Nice gun. Felt and shot much like my S&W M&P15t. Only thing that sucked was it came with 2x20 round clips. It had an ACOG on it which imo is nice because it is much lighter than my eotech 557+3x flip site.

no prob on the mags, have plenty of them acogs are nice, a bit rich for my taste but nice nonetheless. how was the rail? nice and tight? was the 6 oclock rail tight too?

Dang thats nice looking... maybe I ought to set my sites on something like that. I really want an AR with the flat top and flip sites, are there any cheaper models with this? I don't need something super accurate, just a basic plinker but having the flexibility of iron sites or optics is very nice.
