Assuming the picture in your signature is of you, you need to start eating more and lifting heavier weights before you get concerned about spending $50+ per month on supplements.

I've used several different supplements from Universal: Animal Pak, Animal Stak, Animal Stak2, Animal M Stack, Animal Pump, their gainer shake (whatever it was called).

In general, they aren't bad. I think that with some careful research you could probably do better for the prices they charge for their products. I have a hard time distinguishing between Pak, Stak, Stak2 and M Stack. They're each bunch of packs of eleventy billion horse pills.

I'm still looking for the best mutli-vitamin for me. I use BSN Cellmass creatine and NO Xplode, and my shakes are from Optimum Nutrition.

EDIT: I should add that I agree with crt1530, though. I think dropping a bunch of money on these supplements would be getting ahead of yourself if you haven't first gotten your diet and routine in order.

Don't supplement until you need it. See where good old nutrition and lifting will get you first. When you start to hit a plateau, that's when you should start supplementing (esp if you're a beginner).

Of course I'll agree with what the others said about getting diet in shape first and eating enough food. However I will speak to the supplements as well.

1. Animal Pak is a good product, however most bodybuilders will agree that it is overkill. Unless you are a hardcore powerlifter you do not need all the stuff in these paks. You'd be better off with a decent multivitamin like NOW's Adam or MST's 32x. That being said, it isn't a bad product, just a little overpriced in my opinion for what you get out of it.

2. Amino 3001 - I'm not terribly familiar with this product. Looking at the contents though, I personally think you'd be better off (and much cheaper) with some bulk BCAAs instead. They are branch chained amino acids.

3. Real Gains is generally considered a pretty good weight gainer. I'd personally mix my own with oats and olive oil (instead of the maltodextrin that most weight gainers user). But b/c it's easy and pretty good, Real Gains (along with Cytosports' Cytogainer) is a good weight gainer.

Whey protein is the way to go for a beginner. It is relatively cheap and will pack the most punch for the dollar.

Nothing wrong with taking supplements (as long as they are legal and have verified studies backing up their usage) - just don't expect them to work miracles. The whole point behind taking supplements is to "supplement" your daily nutrition and help with your workout. I personally don't like getting all crazy into supplements, but do stick to a handful of tried-and-true's:

1. Whey Protein Isolate (Powder).
2. Creatine Monohydrate (Powder).
3. Ground Flaxseed Meal (Powder~)
4. Super Greens Formula (Powder~).

I mix the powders into a shake I make everyday, which usually includes a banana, persimmon, and a ton of berries. Tastes (and is) better than anything you could buy at Pinkberry or Jamba Juice for half the money each month.

5. Fish Oil (Pill)
6. Glucosimine w/MSM and Chondroitin Sulfate (Pill & Powder)
7. Daily Multivitamin (Pill)

(Ugh, I am going to hate myself for using this phrase) Ya, Rly. Its not like the stuff is freakin' Kryptonite. Greens powder are about as legal as it gets - its basically ground up vegetables, seeds, and oats that equals about 5-10 servings of vegetables. Most people don't eat enough vegetables and other sources of vitamin A as per their daily needs, so this is used to help, again, "supplement' their diet.

What, FDA going to get mad at you for eating literally like a horse? If your questioning the effectiveness of the products, let me ask you this: How can science and medicine refute people eating more vegetables and fiber?! Regardless of whether I mix this stuff into a shake or just mix with water and drink (latter tastes unbelievably horrible, only did it because of weight-cutting related emergency), you down the stuff, its basically like getting an injection of fiber into your body. I go to the bathroom about 20 minutes after consuming. Like with most things, because it is in a powder form, your body absorbs it quicker than if it was in a pill form or just solid food. May sound disgusting, but daily bowel movement = good thing .

I was more interested in the "verified studies backing up their usage" part of the statement. I know what greens plus type supplements are. I have seen no studies. Only annecdotal evidence from the supplement companies and significant fanboyism from naturopathic believers.

yeps good old nutrition as crt1530, but the thing the food i get to eat is rarely balanced so i resort to supplements to complement it. well one more thing, how do you calculate this calorie thing that i see in all threads saying you need x amount of calories per day. thanks a lot for the replies guys.

I didn't mean to sound like a fanboy, but I honestly can say I HAVE seen positive affects on my health when taking the stuff. I was really doubtful at first too; the first time I ever bought greens powder, it was because I went into my local GNC-esque health foods store to purchase my regular supply of whey protein isolate, but the clerk at the counter convinced me to try buying some greens as well. I bought it, tried it out, and by the end of the first week, I could see the stuff working. I was having more "regulated" scheduled bathroom visits, my skin cleared up, and about a week and a half later, when I went in for a physical, my doctor, after getting back the results of my urine analysis, said my pH level was lower than before. Obviously, all of those things could've happened due to a combination of factors, but aside from the greens powder, I didn't change ANYTHING, from my workout schedule to my diet, to what I use on my skin, for months. The powder was the only "outside" variable.

If we think about it, all supplements at one point or another, have been controversial in whether or not they work. For a while, public hysteria even recommended staying away from supplements altogether, just due to the fact that the FDA doesn't treat them the same as prescribed pharmaceuticals. Remember the Ephedra scare? While some supplements (and their marketing) do make you wonder whether they are truly effective or not, I don't think Greens are in that camp. In terms of their health effects, while I might not buy into the whole "10 probiotic strains" advertising or "detoxify and purify the body!" claims, they do fundamentally work - fiber is fiber, whether you get it in the form of a powder, pill, pulpy juices or just raw food. If your just looking for more fiber in your body, are they the most economical solution? By all means no. But then again, if you were looking for fiber alone, you could just buy any number of products at your local supermarket. I personally wouldn't mind any additional health benefits resulting from a product I regularly consume. I don't expect miracles, but do find the product helpful. And judging by that, my personal experiences with the stuff as well as the opinions of my doctor, I stand by the stuff.

I would also like to add, for the record, that its not just the supplement companies that say the stuff works. Studies have been done by various groups that verify both the benefits of the individual ingredients that make up most greens powders and the products as a whole, as well as their their effectiveness on health:

The following groups have done research and have lent scientific and medical credence to the claims:

The Mitsubishi-Tokyo Pharmaceutical Inc.
The National Institute of Health
The American Society for Nutritional Sciences
The Linus Pauling Institute of Micronutrient Research for Optimum Health @ Oregon State University
The Harbor-UCLA Medical Center @ Los Angeles, CA
The UCLA Medical Center (separate hospital from above)
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
The National Cancer Institute
