Thanks. I think a 8600gt or something should do very well then. I was wanting to run 1280x1024 high quality and that should do it nicely. Now if they would just release them.

I'm sure it benefits from a faster CPU though compared to FPS, just as most RTS games do.

That is what I think also. Your video memory usage is also what I saw. Looks like I can live with a 256meg card when I go to buy one.

After tweaking my system (ie auto settings disabled) my scores have increased a little and using high quality at 1024 I now get 36fps. What reduces performance for me is having shadows enabled, with shadows I get 36fps and without I get 45fps.

To get a larger performance boost I will have to overclock the cpu and the video card.

Supreme Commander performance at Bit-tech

"Processor speed isn't such a big issue, and 1GB of RAM will do you just fine. However, be advised that if you want to run SupCom under Vista, you're going to be better off moving to 2GB of RAM and having a faster processor."

"The 8800 GTX barely broke into a sweat. We found that we could get a decent minimum framerate in the mid-teens, and spend most of the time in the thirties with dual 24s."

"With a 7800/7900 or X1900/X1950 card, you can play single-screen at High, with high 30s average framerates."

"Stepping down to medium quality, the big thing you'll notice is that the water doesn't look as good. The detail on the units and buildings is still pretty good, and explosions, battles etc don't really see much difference in appearance. There's a nice relief on the framerate, and anyone looking at 6800 GT card or X800 cards should be pretty happy playing at medium quality with 1280x1024, with averages in the low 20s and a minimum in and around 10. A little bit of tweaking and most enthusiasts should be able to get Medium quality on a single screen."

Played the demo, works fine at 1680x1050 with all effects turned up. This game isn't really to hard on your gpu, if a 7800gt can play well with everything turned up, i doubt a 7600gt would have too much trouble at 1280x1024.

That's because you didn't have enough units on screen. Believe me.

Yup. Once they start hitting about a 1000, its murder even for low-end Core 2 Duos... :disgust:

7600GS for $100 after rebate sound like the best bang for the buck right now?

or 7600GT for $140

or 7800GS for $180

or Radeon 1950Pro for $195?

Wow.. 6800XT is faster than the 7600GS by 10FPS with 4xAA and 8xAF on? And it's $84?!

<------ life got in the way of video card research for Supreme Commander

Is the 6800XT best bang video card right now for this game at 1280x1024 dual screen, medium mode? (i have a Sempron 3100)

GPU is less significant that CPU in this case. You won't be running dual screens at anything higher than low with a single core and a mainstream card. It's hard enough for you to run medium at all, to be quite honest. Sorry.

Now that I've finally gotten off my lazy butt and bought this game I'm going to give this a shot on my rig. It should be able to handle this with ease.

Lol, i don't think anything handles this game with 'ease'.. it probably just wont struggle.

This game is truly epic in scale. Brings my 3200+ @ 2.6-2.8Ghz to its knees 30+ min into a game. I keep a 250 or 500 unit cap too!

1000 unit 2vs2 battles.... wow

ouch.. how about one screen as the map and the other screen as the main screen?

if not, then 7600gs for $100 seems best bang since it sounds like my sempron 3100 is my limiting factor

for the most part the second screen is all gpu dependant, not cpu - other than some small overhead, all it adds is more screen area the gpu has to render.
