Clip of a battle between the developer staff (17meg)

This game can use 2 monitors, optimized for 1280x1024.

I currently have 2 20" LCD's at 1600x1200 running on an old ATI 9600. (cpu= sempron 3100 w/1gig ram)

I'm pretty sure a 3yr old video card aint going to cut it for this game.

What best bang for the buck video card do you recommend?

Edit:
Recommended specs

3.0 GHz Intel or equivalent AMD processor or better
1-2GB RAM or better
8GB available hard drive space
256 MB Video RAM, with DirectX 9 Vertex Shader/Pixel Shader 2.0 support (Nvidia 6800 or better)

so now the game will be released next week (2/16/07), what's the best bang for the buck video card? (i have a radeon 9600Pro)

Played the beta ;(... sorry to disappoint you but the game worked well on my old lan machine : P4 2.4Ghz Northwood , 1GB DDR 1 400 , ATI 9600pro.

Buy a X1950pro AGP and another 1GB of ram. Also overclock you CPU.

If it's coming around March, wait for the midrange GeForce 8-series (who knows, maybe even the midrange Radeon X2-series) to drop. If you're going to buy a new card just for SC, then there's really not much to do but wait for the game to be released. Buying ahead of time isn't a great strategy, mainly b/c you have no reviews and benchmarks to guide you, but also because next-gen DX10 cards seem to kick ass. I guess someone could bench the SC beta, but I don't know if renderer performance is finalized.

Edit: What Tuteja said is promising. It's still an RTS, so your CPU may turn out to be more of a limitation than your GPU if you go easy on the special effects, but a 9600 might struggle with dual 16x12 screens. That said, even something like a 7600GS and especially a 7900GS would be much faster than any 9600. The former is getting ridiculously cheap, and the latter goes for as little as $150AR. Still, wait if there's no rush. GPUs will only get cheaper, and there'll always be another great deal.

Public Beta is still open , just get a free gamespy account and download the beta. Also get the patch.

its still saying i need a pay account when i try to DL.

Edit: got through but it says all beta slots are full...

That is the same problem I have had with Gamespy. I just don't do business with them. Solved my problem. Many other sites gave me the mods I wanted for free  to gamespy. Anyway I really loved TAK and TA. This game looks just as good. I can't wait untill this comes out. I would advise you, like others have, to wait untill it is out to see what type of setup you would need to play it. However from what tuteja1986 is saying it shouldn't take much.

If this game is as amazing as the first TA, I'll be happy to get it. If it was easy enough on my system to not require an upgrade to play well that would be most excellent.

If my 6600gt could manage 3200x1200 on this I'd be in heaven

i used to be an RTS fiend (back when mom wouldn't let me buy FPS's ).....AOE/AOE2, Warzone 2100 (highly overlooked), TA...i couldn't count the hours i put into these. I have been carefully watching Supcom since the website appeared, and i am sooo excited about it. Its nice to know also that it will run acceptably on midrange systems. I wonder if the dual monitor setup will work in a setup like mine...when i have my laptop on my desk, it switches the main display t my 22" LCD, and the laptop screen appears as the extension. Well, regardless of which one is main, i wonder if you have to have two symmetrical displays or if you can have a laptop setup with a main and extension?

I can run Supcom at 1024x768 with everything maxed out and with no AA at 14-20fps. A higher res. kills fps though. My brother with a P4 2.53ghz, 1gig ram, 9700pro can not play it smoothly. He says he gets a slide show with only a few units. This is at 1024x768 with medium settings and no AA. Strange it runs on tuteja1986 machine and not my brothers. What setting did you have it on tuteja1986. There are also several other post around the web about how it runs on different systems.

I'm hoping that this game will get me back into RTS... just incase TBC goes bad in wow

Loved the original version since then RTS format seems to have been fairly stagnant, hope this will breath some life into the genre!

My experience with the beta (not much mind you) and from what I've read, its gonna take some cpu power and decent graphical power to run the game smoothly and probably end up like TA was when it was released. The system in my sig wasn't really up to the task at 1280x1024 and 1024x768 wasn't much better. It is a beta test though.

Played the beta, and loved it. It really can bring your system to their knees. My own system drops down to below 10fps about 1 hour into the game playing with the skirmish A.I. with all graphic settings at low.

BTW, to those playing beta, did you manage to get the keys for the beta client? I keep getting INVALID CODE....shut down firewall, anti-spyware,virus...still no luck:brokenheart:

I would recommend following Pete's suggestion of waiting for the DX10 cards to come out and mature. Like Pete said, wait for around March when the DX10 cards' prices reduces and the game is about to release.

In the meantime, save up the money to buy the R600+RD600 combo.

9700 pro is better than the 9600 right? (both DirectX 9)

i only want to spend ~$100 on a new agp card and not pay the premium for bleeding edge.
(i estimate that i will computer upgrade in mid 2008, thus pci-E thus i will need a new video card.)

X1950pro AGP

It's $230!!!

How is that best bang for the buck?!

An F16 fighter is a deal compared to an F22 fighter. The F16 still offers great performance, maybe 70% of the F22 at a much lower cost.

The X1950Pro AGP offers great performance compared to an 8800GTX, maybe 70% or so for much less money.

But hey don't take my word for it - go buy some cheapo $75.00 card and then post about low frame rates.

Well, if you wanna go cheap, I'd say find a nice, cheap 7600GT. They can be found on the 'Egg for ~$130 (Maybe less since I last checked). A bit over your $100 budget, but the advantage is apparently mind blowing (For a mainstream card, anyway), and should run Supreme Commander beautifully.

And damn, I'm still at it in Company of Heroes, why do all the good RTS's have to come out at once and destroy my social life?!

Toms Hardware Best bang Gaming card 2/07

Best AGP Card For Under $100:
GeForce 6600 GT

Best AGP Card For ~$120:
Radeon X1650 PRO
GeForce 7600 GS

obviously for $20 more, i'll get the 7600GS over the 6600GT since it's one gen above. (7xxx vs 6xxx).

but will the x1650/7600gs play supreme commander well at 1280x1024 dual monitor with 2xAA, 8xAF?

I doubt it. A 7600-class card is about equal to a 6800, which is the recommended spec. My X1900XT was just about acceptable in the demo at that res/settings with one screen. It still slowed down a bit now and then.

I played the beta with a bunch of friends, the FPS got horrible 45 minutes into the game. I've heard it had gotten better by open beta, but it completely destroyed my rig (Opteron 146@2.8ghz and 7900GTO)

Keep on dreaming, my 6800 GS which is only slightly worse than a 7600 GT gets about 20 - 25 fps 1280x1024 medium settings, no AA/AF.
