Supreme Court rules nonunion workers cannot be forced to pay fees to public sector unions

I'm divided on this. On one hand it's nothing more than a shakedown you couldn't opt out of (short of not working there). On the other hand the collective bargaining power of unions does help raise the rates of everyone working that occupation. So it's not like it something for nothing. I do think it's one more crack in the weakening power that unions hold though. I'm not certain that is a good thing given the power and inequality between employers and employees at this point in time.

This makes logical sense but will have huge impact on a lot of industries where a mix of union and non-union workers exists. There are other ways to structure things, I'm sure, but sometimes I hate the supreme court mechanism because it forces immediate changes.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about this one. My thought is that if a union negotiated wages and benefits then, it should only be for their members now. Those that are not a part of the union cannot benefit from it.

I remember way back when working as a sanitation engineer (LOL!) that I was not part of the union. My hourly wage was significantly less than my counterparts.

DING! Another win for free speech and the choice to opt out of unions that use your dues to support politics you don't agree with.

You were already able to get refunds on dues that went toward political causes.

The only reason for this ruling is that organized capital hates organized labor, and organized capital runs the country.

Middle class America was most prosperous at the height of union membership
The middle class was most prosperous when we actually made things. Now that we’ve dived head first into this increasingly automated service based economy, there is not enough critical mass of workers to support unions.

From Justice Kagan's dissent.

“Almost all economic and regulatory policy affects or touches speech. So the majority’s road runs long. And at every stop are black-robed rulers overriding citizens’ choices. The First Amendment was meant for better things.”

Middle class America was most prosperous at the height of union membership

And also when Jim Crow was in effect, non-Hispanic whites made up nearly 9/10ths of the population, being communist could ruin your career, and being openly gay would be a death sentence. Surely those factors are all just as responsible for the prosperity of back then as union membership if not more since you've offered no causal reason why union membership would cause that prosperity.

If the Union only benefits Union members, and the company can employ people for cheaper.... how do the Union employees keep their jobs?

Although, honestly, how much money does a Union need? Maybe its funding mechanism is backwards. To be directly on the backs of fellow workers is going to pit them against you. It's going to make them despise the Union.

It's about time, public employees shouldn't have unions anyway.
Also this. There is an absolute need for trade unions. I never understood the need for public service unions that also serve as the political action committees to help vote in the very people they are supposedly negotiating with.

It is a racket.

The Unions will just do what they do with political contributions now. Automatic Opt-In with a limited ability to Opt-Out. Basically every year you will have to hand deliver a personal letter during a narrow few day window. In California they already made it so your employer (Government Agency) can't inform you of your right to Opt-Out.

Because many times it’s the union employees that will be skilled in job areas that you won’t necessarily get from just non-union employees. I realize that you won’t have that situation for every job type though.

Why not, you support free riding outside the workplace with hundreds of different social welfare spending programs.

I thought conservatives work for everything they get as a point of pride. You know, like pension administration, contract negotiations, representation in disciplinary matters, workplace safety & so forth. Now their coworkers get to carry the load for them, however.
