yeah it is wrong, a girl teacher would have gotten probation or 1 to 2 years in jail if that.

I don't think you're wrong here. She was 17, not 12, and while 17 is not 18, it's not all that far off. Obviously the teacher was misusing his position, but given the frequency of their sexual encounters and how long it went on, it doesn't seem too "forced" to me. If it was, lock him up for a long time, but I think this is probably a case of everyone totally freaking out because it involved sex with an underage girl. But it's also probably a DA playing to the people, a fair trial should result in a verdict closer to what you said...with maybe a few years in jail to think about why men in positions of authority should keep it in their pants.

Sex with underage girls is probably one of the worst taboos in our culture. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's ok for a teacher to be having sex with a 17 year old student, but every time you hear about a case of statutory rape, if it's the girl who's younger, you can bet the guy is, no pun intended, totally screwed.

Our society has gone nuts over the child molestation issue. 300 years is ridiculous for sleeping with a consenting 17 year old. He should be punished but this level of punishment is ridiculous. There are people that kill people that serve less time than that. But the possiblility of a 300 year sentence is only a possibility right now and the trial hasn't actually started yet.

In all fairness, this is the maximum sentence - it is very unlikely he would ever receive that much time.

Yeah, the article stated she went to his home, and met with him somewhere else as well. It also states she performed oral sex on him. Sounds like consent to me.

I'd bet money, this is a revenge case. The girl got upset about something.

i think it's wrong because he's a teacher to a much greater extent than her age. Not sure, but i think the age of consent in England is sixteen, which seems like a sensible age to me.

But what would be the point of having a position of power or authority if you can't whip it out whenever you want? What other reason for having power is there?

I totally agree with you. A teacher shouldn't be haven't sex with any of his or her students. A guy in the court system is totally screw over if he has sex with a minor, where as a women, if she was to have sex with a minor, they can get away with it for the most part. They may be put on probation, or serve a few years in jail, unlike a guy who will be serving what maybe 5 years to life in prison.

The fact that she was underage, coupled with the teacher-student relationship where he was in a position of authority, indicate that the situation was both illegal and immoral per current laws and values in our society. However, being locked up for 300 years strikes me as being slightly excessive punishment for the situation.

Well if you are a high school teacher or teach children under age you should be smart enough to know to keep your hands off of the kids you are teaching. There is an expectation of professionalism for the teaching profession. In most cases we expect a teacher to have a Master's Degree. You would think that after 18 years of school that a teacher would have learned right from wrong.

I have seen many cases where a young girl falls in love with an older guy, and the attorney general will refuse to press charges like statutory rape. So, I am not so quick to jump on the bandwagon. While I think the guy is skum. However, I also think the girl is just a slut. No upstanding young lady has sex with a teacher. They were made for each other. Maybe the teacher broke the law. However, in the long run it is not that severe of an offense. I have leaned never to believe what a man and a woman say about each other. They both probably are just trying to get off scott free. The best thing to do would be to let the guys wife decide their punishment.
