I'm listening to a t-amp right now

Yeah, that or something else cheap. Besides the typical small PCB stuff, there's also the option to get some old receiver off craigslist. Advantage to this would be a built-in tuner, possibly more inputs, etc. On the downside, it will be huge in comparison to the little t-amps or their cousins.

Site says: Power handling: 10W RMS • Impedance: 4 ohms.

If you use a decently powered receiver is there a good chance you'll blow these up pretty easily? (excuse my ignorance w.r.t. audio issues).

I've never used one of these, so I don't know if you'll be able to tell from it when you're pushing it too hard. I'd say just be careful. I don't know how loud these really get, especially since it's highly dependent on what you use for the actual speaker surface. Without knowing the output capabilities of it, it would be hard to judge what to really expect from it I guess?

On the bright side, if you do overdo it, it's not an expensive mistake

Distortion likely goes out the roof at higher power levels, but I could see frying a few accidentally very easily.

If you have em, try some garbage bins / metal cabinets . These things are pretty kickass.

could you glue these to a bass kick drum and use it as a mic? i would think you could get some seriously cool sound kick bass recordings from it (people use old speakers attached to drums for this purpose)
