I've got an 8' surfboard with a small puncture wound on the bottom towards the front of the board. It's broken through the outer shell but not all the way through the inner foam. Can I still use the board like this? Can/does it need to be repaired? If so how much would this cost? It's a small triangular shape, maybe 3/4" long.

Go to your local surf shop and buy a ding repair kit. It has everything you need to fix your board for $10. Just follow the directions, it's painfully easy. Edit-Or you could just pay them $30 to fix it for you.

Whatever you do, don't surf on it with the glass compromised like that. Water will just soak into the foam and cause all kinds of problems at worst, at best it will just cause you to have to wait that much longer for the foam to dry out before you can perform a proper repair.

A quick fix would be to rub surfboard wax in there to fill the hole but that might still allow water in.

Yeah, only use the wax on a board you don't care about. It's a bitch to get out of the ding. Try not to go crazy when using the resin, you want it to be smooth. And if you need to fill a hole in at all, use some of the silica gel they have to thicken up the resin. Wait til it dries (overnight) and then sand.

I've done it before. Just grind out the wax, damaged glass, and foam and fill in with resin and a layer of fiberglass fabric. For small dings it's not a bad way to go. I've dinged a board just walking down to the beach once or twice...filling the ding with wax beats going home.

Just get the stuff called "sun cure". Its super easy and under $10. Some of the ding repair kits require mixing and using fiberglass cloth, but sun cure is way simpler and works very well. You just sand the damaged area, then apply the goop in the shade, then tape a little piece of plastic (included in package) over it to make it smooth. Then put the board in the sun for around 10 minutes for the resin to cure. Take off the tape and sand it smooth if needed.

So I patched the holes today using the resin/hardener, filler, and fiberglass cloth. I didn't do that great of a job at getting the cloth flat, so when I went to sand it, there are some cloth fibers that I sanded through which have the edges exposed a little. Is that a problem for when I get the board wet?

BTW, that stuff is toxic... wow I'm still lightheaded.
