surprise in customer service land

Well, I just got the shock of my life, good customer service! From Maxtor, yet! I bought a small 30gb drive for a computer at work, and the drive turned out to be bad. I called Maxtor, and after a few minutes of discussion with their rep, he decided the drive was bad, and said he would send out a new drive. Low and behold, I got it today. Instead of giving me an identical 30gb, they sent me a 60gb drive! Who are these people? Not only is it a larger drive, it is faster, and has their fluid bearing technology instead of standard ball bearing! Can you believe it?:Q

I didn't get as nice a deal, but when I had an RMA, I got a drive two generations newer of the same size/rotational speed. It was a nice surprise. Maxtor also but I hear other hd companies do this also.

I also RMA'ed a Maxtor; it arrived today. There was really no discussion
I just told the rep it was bad and why,and bam it was on the way.Wish I
coulda got the 20 extra gigs you got. BTW was the reps name Les, or Dan
in Colorado? Anyway KUDOS to Maxtor!!

Mine all are humming along, but my brother's Maxtor 30 GB died and RMA service was hassle-free.

Last time i hat to RMA a Maxtor (long time ago) I had a dead 10GB that i got a 13GB for ... all my newwer Maxtors are still running great. I've RMAd drives thru IBM and WD as well ... IBM takes a long time .. and of the two times I've RMAd with them, once i got back the same model drive, Refurb (for an old 20GB 7200rmp deskstar) once i got back a better drive (75GB 75GXP got back 80GB 120GXP) I just sent out another dead 75GXP ... So i'm Hoping that i get a 120gxp as the replacement .... i do not like the evil chirping sound of the 75gxp.

I'm not really surprised at all. The few Maxtors that I had to RMA have all been hassle-free (replacements arriving within the week) and a couple have been replaced with newer and better drives.

Hmmm. I have a Quantum SCSI drive at work that's gone bad. I know Quantum was bought out by Maxtor. I wonder if Maxtor would honor the warranty?

SCSI drives usually have 5-year warranties. If your drive is still within that warranty period (based on your purchase date or date of manufacture), Maxtor will definitely honor the warranty.
