surround sound w/ santa cruz?

So I have a dolby digital enabled reciever, 5.1 sound connected to it, a brand new santa cruz sound card hookd up, and a stereo/RCA adapter. When I hook up everything and select digital output, then I get nothing but static with VERY FAINT whatever I want to hear under the static.
If I hook it up for analog, everything works fine--but no surround, since as far as I can tell the santa cruz wont output all 5.1 sound from one plug unless its the digital, in analog it takes 3 different plugs at once.
I have tried every setting I can find from the santa cruz control panel, but nothing works.
I got this sound card so that I could actually get surround sound out of my setup, so this is very irksome!
Any kind soul out there have a suggestion?

You need to have a mono miniplug to single RCA cable. Attach the miniplug to the versajack and the RCA end to the coax digital in of your receiver. Under the Santa Cruz control panel, configure the versa jack to be digital out.

Another way to do it is to have three stereo miniplug to RCA cables and plug them to the 6-channel analog inputs of your receiver.

what Ive got is a reciever with no digital input, and no 6 channel input. Ive got a bunch of two channel inputs and one 4 channel input. It does support 5.1 sound tho.

Well, how can it support 5.1 if it doesn't have digital inputs and a 6 channel (5.1) input? Is it a Dolby Pro-logic only receiver with 5 speaker connections?

On the 4 channel input, what does it say on the back? I suspect that is actually part of the 6 channel input; you have to use that in conjunction with one of the two channel inputs to make it 6 channel ( the two channels are front left & right, the 4 channel corresponds to center, rear left & right, and subwoofer).

Actually I think a Dolby Pro-logic only receiver with 5 speaker connections is exactly what it is. For some reason I thought it had a sub, but its just got front/rear left/right and a center. The 4 inputs are actually for tapes, and look like they are dual input-output two channel hookups instead of four channels. the aux cd and vcr inputs are all two channels. It does have a "surround sound" toggle and when I play cds through it, it plays through all 5 speakers I have hooked up.

surround sound mode enables Dolby Pro Logic. what Dolby Pro Logic does is look at the stereo stream, and extract 4 channels from it, center, left front, right front, and rear. your rear speakers are actually just one channel (compared to Dolby Digital).

Then, in that case, just configure the SC for two speaker output and disable digital out (obviously, you can't use it).
