SurroundStation? Anyone tried to build one?

Okay, I am not sure where this should go in the forums, but I figured I would ask it here, since most of you are used to working with stuff like this.

I was recently given a pair of the Logitech Z-540's as a gift, and so far they have been working great. Only problem is trying to find a good position for the rear speakers. I was in CompUSA one day and noticed they had a product on display called the Creative SurroundStation. When I asked if they had any in stock, the guy on floor told me that they didn't carry it anymore.

Needless to say, I went online that night, and looked it up on the Creative site. This was what they had. Basically, it is two booms which extend over your head and allow you to repostion your speakers behind you for game play, and then out of the way when you aren't using them.

Maybe it because I have a limited income (I'm still just a student) but 80 dollars seems a little steep if you ask me, plus the added price of shipping (Since I live in Hawaii).

I was wondering if anyone has tried to make something like this. I was in Home Depot the other day, and noticed they have have many possible materials. At first I was leaning towards PVC pipe, but it tends to bend over time. Someone suggested that I use EMT (I don't remember what it stands for, but it is basically metal tubing).

Right now, I am open to any suggestions you all might have. My biggest dilema right now is how should I anchor it? I am also going to paint it black to match my setup.

Thanks in advance. I will post some picks once I get working on it.

Yeah, I am thinking about going back over to CompUSA and seing if they will sell me the floor model. If I could get it for around 50 dollars, I think I would be happy. At least I know it wil work, and won't go and fall apart on me in the middle of a massive Wolfenstein frag fest. I went to the hardware store yesterday, and they recomended PVC since the angled connectors for EMT don't really have that many options. I want to paint it black, So i figure I will just go ahead and use the Plastikote vinyl paint I used on my drive bezels for my case. Also, I still haven't figured out how to anchor it, or if I am going to try to create the "joints" like the Creative one has.

Hopfully, I can talk to the manager down at Comp and they will let me pick up the floo model they have. Otherwise, it's back to Ace tomorrow.

PS: Does anyone know how to attatch images so they actually show up in the post, not just a link? I have a few sketches that I want to upload to give you all a better idea of what I am talking about.

Well, I don't know about the SurroundStation, but I know that you cannot have pics in the post itself here, you have to link to the pic on some other server. As for the SurroundStation, fun idea, but I have a small room so there's only 1 meter between the back of my head and the rear speakers so it's not necessary.

Well, I was back down at CompUSA again today, and I was able to speak with one of the managers. I took a bunch a while to get approved, but I was able to pick up the floor model for 50 bucks. Not bad if you ask me. I had checked things out at the hardware store, and while it would be possible for me to build one, I would much rather have one preassembled. Other than that, the thing was in great shape, not really any dings or paint blemishes. I am not sure if any of the other stores have the displays, but I can scan the reciept if anyone needs to see it.
