Common problem on glossy screens. I'm using a u3011 now which probably has an indestructible matte coating (I've abused it a bit, I'm not sure anything can scratch it) so none here.

Nope. Asus PA246Q; it's admittedly expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Related question: anyone using an IPS or PLS panel noticed "IPS glow"? Since IPS panels are substantially brighter than TN, there's a phenomenon where corners can seem "lighter" due to IPS glow depending on your viewing angle, which is basically because the backlighting is so intensely bright on IPS panels (and like mentioned, much much much brighter than TN).

I think this is why many IPS panels opt for an aggressive (ie: very thick) anti glare coating, typically being much thicker than the AG present on most TN panels. To prevent the IPS glow phenomenon, I could be wrong though.

Yeah. It's an old 19" no-name monitor from 2006/2007, it's getting ready to die (it flickers on anything but high brightness). My laptop's display does as well, in the bottom right corner.

I'm looking at a U2412 or something similar when I finally get a new desktop at some point. I might go nuts and get a U2711/2713 even, since I'd like to use it for a long time.

My Asus VH236H has some fairly noticeable uniform bleed across the top. It's not bad, but it's noticeable. I like that it is atleast uniform/symettrical.

I don't know if I should exchange or not :\

CNET says this: The VH236H achieved a brightness score of 283 candelas per square meter (cd/m2)--just a few points shy of Asus's claimed 300 cd/m2 max. The Samsung SyncMaster P2370 achieved a lower brightness with 239 cd/m2, but was right under Samsung's 250 cd/m2 max. On our dark-screen test, both monitors exhibited significant backlight bleedthrough on the top and bottom edges of the displays, but the Asus performed slightly better.

I paid $249.99 for my 'small' 22" 1680x1050 LCD. I paid extra for quality so it better not have any bleeding, know what I'ze be sayin', bro?

I'm probably far from typical around here. I have 3 acer monitors and one HP, all inexpensive TN style, all bought new, and all have backlight bleed. Then there is the Asus notebook, with backlight bleed.

The 20 inch acer is particularly bad, but since it's serving my old P4 Northwood it's not a big issue.

I've never seen a backlit monitor without very irritating bleed if you have a dark enough room. Perhaps an absolutely bleedless monitor exists somewhere, but I have never seen it. In general, monitor technology right now is horrible, it's all form over function.

Agreed. If I had to skimp I would do it on a different component, I think the monitor is by far the most important part of the experience.

On my new Asus VG278HE it's terrible. I like the monitor a lot but the backlight bleed is still too distracting at the moment. Maybe over time I'll just get used to it.

On a $500 monitor, Asus should really be taking a better look at those. IMO there should be no bleed on a monitor that expensive.

On mine, the bleed doesn't set in until the monitor has been on for 15 minutes or so. Is it the same for yours?

And also, where is the location of the bleed on yours?

Mine's there as soon as I switch it on. It's worst along the bottom, pretty bad on the left and recently it's getting bad on the top too.

I tried watching a film the other day and I couldn't focus on it all. All I saw was the awful bleed.

You're right, for such an expensive monitor, it should be minimal.

Saying that, overall it's a good monitor but it's vastly overpriced.

Yeah. I run a $200 120hz Viewsonic monitor. No issues here. I find it usually happens for people who run straight out of box brightness settings. My monitor did have some bleed out of box because it was set to nearly full brightness by default, no clue why but it was way too bright. Tweeked that and it all disappeared.

This, although 'very irritating' is probably subjective and varies from individual to another. Bleed exists even with $10k monitors at the radiology dept where they are used in dark, sound proof rooms with no light other than that from the monitors. Perhaps there is a reason why there are hardcore CRT fans out there.

No, instead of using the technology level of stained glass, my monitor excites a phosphor coating with an electromagnetically controlled electron gun.

I don't see any backlight bleeding but I do notice the IPS glow on my side monitors, running a triple U2412 setup.
