Survey of last ten presidents

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush ranks as the least popular and most bellicose of the last ten U.S. presidents, according to a new survey.

Only nine percent of the 662 people polled picked Bush as their favorite among the last 10 presidents. John F. Kennedy topped that part of the survey, with 26 percent, closely followed by Bill Clinton (25 percent) and Ronald Reagan (23 percent).

Bush was also viewed as the most warlike president (43 percent), the worst for the economy (42 percent) and the least effective (33 percent). But he was rated most highly in response to a question on who would do the right thing even if it were unpopular.

The survey was conducted by the Chicago-based National Qualitative Centers, a marketing research company, as part of research for a forthcoming book on popular preferences, one of its authors, Ken Berwitz, said on Friday.

in all fairness, people are very quick to forget the bad stuff and allll the countless of bad stuff regarding bush is fresh in peoples memories so in that regard its no surprise

When the bad things done in a presidency as a small as in most other presidencies, they are forgotten almost as soon as the news stops covering them. Bush has some doosies that will tarnish his record forever, not to mention when many Republicans think of a great president, are they going to bypass Reagan to vote for Dubya.... not likely

I watched that "Greatest American" series on History Channel. Dubbya was 7th, Clinton was 8th. Yikes to both of those... Reagan beat out Lincoln, MLK Jr., Washington and Franklin to be crowned The Greatest American. (Michael Jackson & Madonna made the list too)

I'll give this survey about as much weight as I did that one.

Yeah, I tried watching that, but it was such a joke with who was on that list.

im pretty sure reagan and clinton would have done quite well during their terms.

You're 100% correct about Dubbya and Clinton. Reagan.... I think you could make a case for him in the top 100. But better than MLK, Lincoln, Franklin, Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, FDR and Edison? No way.

What the heck did Clinton do that was good? As far as I can tell (I was pretty young for most of his presidency) he just rode the internet boom.

As my number 1 overall, I'd go with Washington...the last 10? Hmm. That's a toughie.

Of the past then presidents, Clinton and Reagan are at the top in my list. Note: party doesnt matter to me because these days, essentially both parties are the same. George W. is definitely at the bottom of my list. I have my reasons for these choices but that would be a whole other thread.

I know, all this praise for Reagan. Please. He was a dimensia stricken fool, responsible for the ridiculous items Red mentions above, as well as Iran-Contra. He happened to be in office when the Soviets finally ran out of money, so he's the greatest human being ever to grace the Earth? BZZZZZT. I don't THINK so.

Actually when compared to the Dub he does come across as a great man. Until the end of his second term when dementia started to take it's toll on him, Reagan displayed the ability to adapt and learn on the job, something that the Dub can't seem to do.

Regarding his dealings with the Soviets, what made him successful is that he had a great Counterpart in Gorbachev who was willing to overlook Reagan's ignorant rhetoric and connect with Reagan on a personal level which helped educate Reagan and led to a viable solution to the problems between the two Super Powers and the eventual downfall of the Soviet Union as a Totalitarian State.

That question seems badly phrased. I would vote for Bush in those catagories as well, and I think he would do what HE considers right even if was unpopular.

It almost pains me to say it but Reagan was a borderline great President in comparison to Bush.

Can you imagine Reagan claiming that he's fulfilling his Constitutional duty by unlawfully spying on Americans?

I think the 4th Amendment prohibits spying on Americans without any sort of warrent. Perhaps it's not "privacy", but still, not exactly legal.
