Perhaps I'm being picky, but House didn't choose who got to stay and who didn't. That was up to the writers. I'm overly sensitive to such conversations after spending most of a year car-pooling with 2 female coworkers who discussed Beverly Hills 90210 and/or Friends as if the characters were their best friends and neighbors. "I don't know what she sees in Joey. If it was me, I'd dump him." "Yeah, but he did bring her flowers, so that ought to count for something..." 20 minutes in the car, 2 days a week, the conversation was all about the previous night's episode. Ickkkkkk!

I understand your frustration, but your logic completely ruins the concept of a sitcom.
I watch House (it's the only show I'll turn on the TV to watch) because the writers are brilliant and Hugh Laurie is a sexy beast.
Obviously the writers knew who was staying and who wasn't from the moment they wrote them into the first script. When I say "House did this" or "House did that", I'm usually referring more to the decisions of the writers, and I do not delude myself into thinking they are actual people, but you have to allow yourself a modicum of detachment to reality in order to enjoy any show.
